Your digital car key may keep working for a limited time after your phone shuts down from low battery, but it is not guaranteed. Apple says supported Apple Wallet car keys can work through Power Reserve for up to five hours; Google says some Android keys may work for a few hours. Whether you can unlock or start the car depends on the phone, key setup, vehicle and its settings. Keep the vehicle’s approved backup key available.
What happens when the phone shuts down?
On some compatible phone-and-car setups, a restricted power reserve keeps the digital key available after the phone has powered down because its battery is low. This is not the same as the phone continuing to operate normally, and it does not mean every digital key will work with a dead battery.
Apple says Power Reserve can let you use an Apple Wallet car key for up to five hours while the iPhone needs charging. Google says some Android users may still be able to unlock and start their car for a few hours after low-battery shutdown. Google does not give a precise duration. These are platform-specific statements, not guarantees for every phone or vehicle. Apple’s car-key documentation and Google’s Android Help describe the respective conditions.

- Try the vehicle’s documented entry method. If the maker says the key supports NFC at low battery, hold the phone at the driver’s door handle where instructed. A reserve key may require a deliberate tap rather than hands-free entry.
- Use the in-car key reader to start the vehicle. If the door unlocks, place the phone on the designated reader or charging area as the vehicle’s instructions specify. Google’s guidance describes holding the phone near the door handle and then placing it on the in-car key reader.
- If it does not work, use the vehicle’s backup. Use the physical key, fob, key card or other fallback provided for that exact vehicle. Do not assume a card is included or that the same procedure applies to every model.
- Charge the phone once you regain access. A compatible, charged power bank can replenish the phone, but it is not a substitute for a backup key.

Phone, wallet and vehicle compatibility
The phone model and operating system, digital-key wallet or app, vehicle model year and trim, market, and automaker software can all affect availability. Google says low-battery use is limited to select vehicles and markets. Check the automaker’s compatibility information for your specific car rather than assuming that a digital key feature supports reserve operation.

Settings and the way you present the phone
For Google-supported vehicles with passive entry, Google says passive entry must be on for low-power use. For vehicles without passive entry, verification required must be off. The required interaction may also change: a key that normally uses proximity may need an NFC tap at the door and again at an in-car reader. Porsche describes its Digital Key as using NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy or Ultra-Wideband depending on the device and operation; that does not establish that every radio method remains available after shutdown. Express Mode and manufacturer-specific behavior
Apple’s published duration is up to five hours, but it is not a universal promise for every car-key setup. BMW USA likewise says an iPhone with Express Mode enabled can lock, unlock and start the vehicle for up to five hours after its battery has run out. That is BMW’s stated condition for its system, not a general rule for all vehicles. BMW’s FAQ provides the system-specific details.

Which backup should you rely on?
Use the fallback documented for your make, model year, trim and market. It may be a physical key or fob, an NFC card, or another authorized key; the available equipment and its operation are vehicle-specific.

For example, Cadillac says its key card, when equipped, can lock, unlock and start the vehicle if the phone is out of battery. The phrase “when equipped” matters: do not assume your Cadillac, or another make, includes a card. Check the owner’s manual or the automaker’s instructions. Cadillac’s Digital Key guide describes its documented fallback.

- Confirm whether your exact phone and vehicle support digital-key use after low-battery shutdown.
- Check the required settings, including Express Mode, passive entry or verification requirements where applicable.
- Locate the physical key or card and learn the door-unlock and vehicle-start procedure.
- Test the approved backup while the phone is charged, following the automaker’s instructions.
- Keep the backup accessible when travelling instead of relying on a reserve feature with a limited, setup-dependent duration.
For setup and compatibility details, Apple’s Apple Wallet car-key instructions and the automaker’s manual are more useful than assuming that another brand’s steps will apply.
