Leaving an AI app builder does not have one universal outcome. If the service gives you a conventional, runnable codebase, you can usually continue on another host—but you must move the database, files, secrets, domains, and platform-managed services separately. If the builder stores your application logic in a visual proprietary system, there may be no equivalent source code to export, so leaving can mean rebuilding the app on another stack.
The practical question is not merely whether you can download code. It is whether you can run, secure, update, and support the complete production system without the builder.
What actually changes when you leave
An app is a collection of components, not a single download. Canceling an account, allowing a subscription to lapse, or deciding to deploy elsewhere can affect each component differently.

Source code and project files
A code-generating builder may let you synchronize a repository or download source files, routes, styles, configuration, and a dependency manifest. That gives you a starting point for an independent deployment. It does not prove that the project will build without the builder’s services, nor that every server-side function is included.

Database and user data
Tables, schema definitions, indexes, user accounts, permissions, and audit records are commonly held in a managed backend. They normally require a separate export and import. User records may have legal, security, or provider-specific restrictions; use the builder’s supported export process rather than copying production storage informally.
Uploaded files and media
Images, documents, generated assets, and other uploads can live in object storage that is independent of the code repository. Export the files and preserve their paths, metadata, access rules, and any transformations the application expects.
Secrets and configuration
API keys, database credentials, OAuth settings, webhook secrets, encryption keys, and environment variables are usually excluded from a source export. You must recreate them in a secure secret store at the destination. Never commit production secrets to a public repository or paste them into application code.

Hosting, domain, and traffic
The builder may provide the runtime, deployment pipeline, CDN, TLS certificate, preview URLs, and DNS instructions. A new host must provide equivalent settings. Your domain can remain yours, but its DNS records, SSL setup, redirects, and email-related records may need changes. The old deployment can continue serving users until you deliberately change traffic or the provider disables it.

Managed features and integrations
Authentication, scheduled jobs, email delivery, payments, AI calls, connectors, webhooks, analytics, and background workers may be platform-managed. A code export can still contain calls to those services. At the destination, each dependency must be migrated, replaced, or deliberately retained under an account you control.
Builder type determines your exit path
Before planning a move, identify whether your builder generates ordinary code, hides logic in a visual runtime, or combines both models.
| Builder model | What you may receive | Typical exit work | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code-generating builder | Repository or archive containing application code and configuration | Set up a new build environment, move data and files, recreate secrets, replace managed services, and deploy | Exported code still depends on vendor APIs, hosting, authentication, or storage |
| Visual or no-code platform | Platform project, visual workflows, and data exports; not necessarily conventional source code | Recreate screens, workflows, permissions, integrations, and data model on another stack | Application logic may be inseparable from the vendor runtime |
| Hybrid platform | Some exported frontend code plus vendor-managed backend features | Move the portable layer and replace or migrate the managed layer | The boundary between portable and proprietary parts is easy to miss |
Do not infer portability from a marketing label such as “AI-powered.” Ask whether the exported project can be built and operated on infrastructure that you control, with the vendor account removed.
Ownership is not the same as portability
Terms that say you own content or source code answer a legal question; they do not guarantee an easy technical exit. Ownership can also be limited by third-party libraries, images, fonts, generated material, connector terms, or data-protection obligations.

Check four separate questions:
- Do you have a durable copy of the source and project assets?
- Can the source run on a compatible host without the builder’s control plane?
- Can you export the data, users, and files in a usable format?
- Can you replace every vendor-managed service the application calls?
For example, the builder documentation for Lovable says application source and content created with the service belong to the creator, subject to third-party rights, and that projects can be synchronized to a repository. The same documentation distinguishes moving only the frontend while retaining Lovable Cloud, moving backend services to infrastructure controlled by the owner, and a complete move that deploys code, migrates data and services, and replaces calls still made through Lovable. That is vendor documentation rather than an independent migration test.
The framework also matters. Lovable documentation states that apps created from May 13, 2026 use TanStack Start, while older apps use React with Vite. Deployment requirements therefore depend on when and how a particular app was created; identify the actual framework in the repository before selecting a host.
A Bubble comparison page, with competitor information checked on October 6, 2026, describes Bubble’s application logic, data, and privacy rules as visual and says there is no generated code underneath; it also says Bubble apps are hosted on Bubble. On that model, exporting data is not equivalent to exporting the application. Rebuilding the logic and permissions on another stack may be necessary. The page is vendor-authored and describes the products and configurations covered there, so confirm current capabilities for your specific account.

A staged migration that minimizes downtime
- Secure an owner-controlled copy. Synchronize the project to a repository or create an export archive. Include source, configuration templates, dependency manifests, migration files, static assets, and documentation. Verify that another person on your team can access the copy.
- Freeze and back up the old system. Record the current deployment, database version, storage contents, DNS records, and third-party settings. Keep a dated backup and document how to restore the previous version.
- Export data and files separately. Use supported database, user, and storage exports. Preserve identifiers and relationships so references in the application remain valid. Check whether passwords, tokens, or personal data require a special transfer procedure.
- Recreate configuration securely. Create destination environment variables and secrets from a controlled checklist. Rotate credentials when appropriate, and keep development, staging, and production values separate.
- Provision an independent destination. Choose a host, database, storage, email service, authentication provider, and job runner that match the application’s requirements. Confirm the framework and runtime versions before installing dependencies.
- Connect or replace backend services. Point the application at the migrated database and storage. Replace builder-specific authentication, AI calls, connectors, webhooks, scheduled tasks, and server functions. Update callback URLs and allowed origins in every external provider.
- Deploy a staging copy. Build and run the exported project outside the builder. Resolve missing packages, incompatible runtime assumptions, and configuration errors before using production data. Keep staging isolated from live email, payment, and webhook endpoints unless you intentionally use test accounts.
- Test critical user journeys. Verify new and returning sign-in, authorization boundaries, forms, file upload and download, payments, email delivery, integrations, scheduled work, AI responses, and failure handling. Compare important records and totals with the old system.
- Cut over with a rollback plan. Lower DNS time-to-live ahead of the change when practical, schedule the switch, and keep the old service available. Change DNS or production routing only after the new deployment passes verification. Monitor errors and transactions, and be ready to restore the previous records if a critical failure appears.
Expect some users to sign in again if authentication providers, cookie domains, or session keys change. Tell users about planned downtime or reauthentication when it is likely.

Code-export services such as Lovable
An export can make the frontend move relatively direct, but the complete move still includes data, authentication, storage, secrets, hosting, and replacement of calls made through the service. Newer TanStack Start projects and older React-plus-Vite projects can require different deployment setup. Inspect the repository rather than assuming one universal procedure.

When workflows, privacy rules, and data behavior exist only inside a visual editor and hosted runtime, there may be no source package to deploy elsewhere. Plan a rebuild: document screens and workflows, map the data model, reproduce authorization rules, export and transform data, then test equivalent behavior. Treat the existing app as a specification, not as a portable codebase.

Hosted development environments such as Replit
Independent coverage has identified hosted databases and deployment as infrastructure dependencies to plan for when leaving Replit. It also reports code export with additional backend migration and deployment work. Those observations describe particular configurations, not every project; inspect your database, deployment, and integrations directly.
What determines time, cost, and difficulty
No reliable universal migration time or price exists. The effort is driven by the application rather than by the export button.
| Driver | Why it changes the work |
|---|---|
| Number of data tables and relationships | More records, migrations, indexes, and integrity checks increase preparation and validation. |
| Authentication complexity | Multiple providers, custom roles, or account recovery can require reconfiguration and user reauthentication. |
| Platform-managed features | Each proprietary connector, AI call, job, or workflow needs a compatible replacement or redesign. |
| Traffic and availability requirements | High-volume or always-on apps need staged cutover, monitoring, and a tested rollback path. |
| Destination stack | A close runtime match reduces changes; a different framework or database increases conversion and testing. |
| Compliance and sensitive data | Personal, financial, or regulated data adds access controls, audit evidence, and approved transfer procedures. |
Get a stack-specific estimate only after the inventory identifies what is portable and what must be rebuilt. Avoid promises based solely on project size or source-file count.
Common failure modes and recoveries
| Symptom after export | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The app builds but pages fail at runtime | Missing environment variables or vendor API calls | Compare required configuration with the inventory, then replace or reconfigure each dependency. |
| Users cannot sign in | Different callback URLs, cookie domains, session keys, or an unmigrated identity store | Reconfigure the identity provider, test account recovery, and plan for reauthentication if sessions cannot be preserved. |
| Records appear without files | Database migrated but object storage was not | Export and import files, preserve object paths, and update access policies and URLs. |
| Forms submit but no email or webhook arrives | Sender verification, secrets, endpoint URLs, or scheduled jobs remain tied to the old service | Recreate provider settings, rotate secrets, and test delivery with non-production recipients. |
| Visual workflows have no equivalent code | Logic is stored in a proprietary editor | Document behavior from the running app and rebuild workflows and permissions on the destination. |
| DNS change makes the site unavailable | Destination deployment or TLS was not ready | Restore the previous DNS records, keep the old service running, fix the destination, and retry during a controlled window. |
How to judge exit risk before choosing a builder
Score a prospective platform on the following questions, and obtain written answers for anything that affects a long-lived project:
- Is source code exportable, readable, and buildable outside the vendor?
- Can the exported app run without a vendor account or proprietary runtime?
- Can you export schema, production data, users where permitted, and uploaded files?
- Can authentication, storage, email, payments, AI, connectors, and scheduled jobs move to accounts you control?
- Can you access deployment settings, environment variables, logs, backups, and rollback controls?
- Are visual workflows or privacy rules represented in portable files, or only in the platform editor?
- What happens to your domain, data, and backups if billing stops or the service changes?
Perform a small proof of exit before committing a critical application: export a sample project, build it on an independent host, import test data, and invoke its key integrations. A successful proof does not eliminate migration work, but it exposes platform-bound dependencies while changing builders is still affordable.
