What Happens to Xbox Game Pass Games After They Leave the Service?

When a game leaves the Xbox Game Pass library, your subscription no longer gives you access to it. To keep playing, Xbox points members to buying the game; an eligible title may have a member discount. Leaving the library does not, by itself, establish what happens to a saved game or whether an installed copy will launch.

What changes when a game leaves Game Pass?

Game Pass is access to a changing library, not permanent ownership of every game in it. Xbox says subscribers can access library games until their subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the library. Once a title departs, it is no longer available through the subscription. See Xbox’s Game Pass FAQ for its access terms.

The catalog varies over time and by region, Game Pass plan, and platform. Check the current catalog and the listing for the platform you use rather than assuming a title is available to every subscriber. Xbox’s Game Pass catalog identifies games scheduled to leave.

How can you keep playing?

Xbox’s departing-games notice says to buy a game to keep playing. It advertises savings of up to 20% with a member discount, but that is a promotional maximum, not a guaranteed discount on every departing game. Check the specific game’s current listing for its price and whether an offer applies.

What about your save and installed copy?

Xbox’s cited FAQ and catalog pages do not specify whether saves remain usable after a game leaves the library, or whether a downloaded installation will launch without another license. Do not assume that a save will transfer or that an installed copy will continue to work. For a definitive answer about a particular game and platform, contact Xbox Support.
