If a manufacturer shuts down, its warranty does not automatically transfer to another company—and the closure does not by itself determine whether you can still get a repair. Your options depend on who issued the warranty, the contract terms, any successor business, applicable state law, and whether the company filed for bankruptcy. A separately purchased service contract may still be handled by its own provider or administrator.
First, identify which promise covers the repair
People often call every repair plan a “warranty,” but an included product warranty and a separately purchased service contract are different agreements. The included warranty generally names the warrantor and explains what it will do for covered defects, such as repair, replacement, or refund. A service contract has its own provider, administrator, coverage rules, and claims process. Read the documents rather than assuming the manufacturer is responsible for both.
- Product warranty: Check the written warranty for the named warrantor, coverage period, exclusions, and repair or claims instructions. The FTC explains what warranty terms should cover in its warranty guidance.
- Service contract: Look for the contract provider and administrator, how to file a claim, and what happens if either party closes. The FTC explains the distinction and considerations in its guidance on extended warranties and service contracts.
- Seller or dealer: The retailer may be a useful contact, but selling the product does not automatically make it responsible for the manufacturer’s warranty. State-created implied warranty rights may also be relevant, and state law varies.
For cars, the FTC specifically says that if a service-contract administrator goes out of business, the dealer may have to perform the work under the contract; if the dealer closes, the administrator might have to fulfill it. These are possibilities under the contract, not a universal rule for all products or plans. Check the agreement and the FTC’s auto warranty and service-contract guidance.

A warranty is a written promise, but a promise is only practically useful if a responsible party can be reached and the repair can be carried out. A closure may leave no staff, parts, service network, or active claims channel. The warranty wording alone cannot establish that another company has taken over those obligations, or that a claim will be paid.

Contact the seller as well as any entity named as warrantor. The FTC advises consumers to contact the seller about a product problem and then the manufacturer if the seller does not resolve it. That is a practical route to ask about available remedies, not a guarantee that the seller is legally liable. State law and the facts of the sale may affect implied warranty rights; the FTC discusses these distinctions in its Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law.
Do not assume that a buyer of the brand has accepted the old warranty obligations. Ask the buyer or successor directly, and check official notices or updated service instructions for the particular product. Whether obligations transferred depends on the transaction, warranty terms, and applicable law.

How to check whether bankruptcy changes your next step
A business can close without filing bankruptcy, and a bankruptcy filing does not by itself say whether a warranty claim will be paid or whether the business will keep operating. If a case exists, follow its notices and procedures: the debtor’s legal name, bankruptcy chapter, claim status, and deadlines matter.
- Read every notice you received. Note the court, debtor name, chapter, claims agent or trustee, and any proof-of-claim deadline. Use the case’s official notices and docket to confirm current instructions.
- Check whether your claim is listed and how it is classified. In a corporate Chapter 11 case, a claim that is not scheduled, or is listed as disputed, contingent, or unliquidated, generally requires a proof of claim for plan voting or distribution. See the U.S. Courts’ Chapter 11 guidance.
- Follow the applicable claim process and deadline. In Chapter 7, an unsecured creditor receives a distribution only if the estate has assets available and the creditor files a proof of claim. A filed claim is not a promise of payment. The U.S. Courts explains the process in its Bankruptcy Basics process guide.
These are general U.S. pointers, not a prediction for a particular case. The bankruptcy notices and orders control, and a substantial claim or active case may warrant advice from a professional familiar with the relevant jurisdiction.

What to do about the repair now
- Gather your records. Find the warranty, proof of purchase, product registration, service-contract paperwork, earlier repair records, and messages with the company. The FTC recommends keeping the written warranty and receipt.
- Map the parties. Identify the product maker, the warrantor named in the warranty, the seller or dealer, and any service-contract provider or administrator. Use the contact details in the documents to ask who currently handles claims and repairs.
- Ask about the repair route before authorizing work. Find out whether an authorized repair provider, an independent shop, or the seller can diagnose and repair the product, and whether the contract requires advance approval. Keep estimates and written responses.
- Preserve your claim evidence. Keep dated photos or videos of the problem, service notes, estimates, invoices, and copies of communications. If you report a defect during the warranty period, keep proof of when you reported it.
- Escalate if there is no clear route. The FTC points consumers to state or local consumer-protection offices and state attorneys general. If bankruptcy is involved, use the case’s stated claims channels and deadlines.
Can an independent repair shop work on the product?
Sometimes, but a manufacturer’s closure can make parts, diagnostic information, or trained technicians harder to find. Federal warranty law also does not mean every independent shop can fix every product. The FTC says manufacturers generally cannot condition warranty coverage on using specified parts or services for non-warranty repairs unless they provide them free or have an FTC waiver. That protection is not a guarantee that parts or repair information will remain available after a company closes. See the FTC’s federal warranty-law guide.
