For now, TalkTalk broadband customers should keep using their service as usual. BT says it acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited out of administration on 5 October 2026. TalkTalk says existing contracts, prices, payment arrangements, equipment and support channels remain in place, and customers do not need to take action because of the acquisition.
Will your TalkTalk broadband and phone service continue as normal?
Yes, according to the companies and Ofcom. TalkTalk says broadband and phone service continue as normal; BT says it does not anticipate an interruption. Ofcom says customers can continue using their landline, broadband and pay-TV services during the transition. Keep using your service and your existing TalkTalk account.
What happened on 5 October 2026?
BT announced that it had acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited out of administration. TalkTalk says customer contracts transferred to TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited on that date. The customer-facing guidance is that you remain a TalkTalk customer for now, with TalkTalk continuing to provide and support your service.
BT says TalkTalk and BT will operate separately and continue to compete while regulatory review proceeds. BT reported 1.5 million retail customers and 1 million wholesale customers as part of the transaction; those are BT Group’s reported acquisition figures, not a forecast of changes to any individual customer’s service.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Will your contract or monthly price change?
Not as a result of the transfer itself. TalkTalk says your existing contract and monthly price remain unchanged, and your current payment method stays in place. BT says current contract, price and renewal arrangements remain the same. If you also have BT services, BT says those and your TalkTalk services continue to be treated separately for customers.
Do you need a new router or other equipment?
No replacement equipment is currently required. TalkTalk says your existing router and equipment should continue to work normally, and BT says customers do not need replacement equipment. You can continue to access your online account and billing information as before.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
How do you get support or manage billing?
Use your usual TalkTalk support channels for account questions, and keep following your existing payment arrangements. BT says TalkTalk support teams, existing complaints processes and priority support arrangements for vulnerable customers remain in place. Existing engineer appointments will continue, and no immediate changes are planned for TalkTalk TV services or equipment.
The companies’ guidance does not ask you to install a new device or respond to an unsolicited message. Use the contact details and account routes you already trust rather than treating an unexpected message about the acquisition as an official instruction.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Can you leave your contract because BT took over?
The acquisition alone does not give you a new right to cancel without charge. TalkTalk says leaving remains subject to the terms and charges already attached to your agreement. Ofcom advises checking whether you are still within your minimum contract period: switching before it ends could mean early termination charges. You do not have to switch because of the acquisition.
If you are considering changing provider, compare what is available at your address, the monthly price and contract length, and whether the service meets your needs. Check any early termination charge before arranging a switch.

Will TalkTalk become BT, or will customers be moved to new packages?
No definite migration, brand change, new contract, package move, price change, router replacement or service retirement has been announced in the current customer guidance. BT and TalkTalk say they will remain separate while regulatory review proceeds. They say affected customers will receive clear notice and support if anything changes.
What is the regulatory position?
The acquisition has been announced as completed, but regulatory review was still pending in official material checked on 7 October 2026. On 5 October, the UK Secretary of State issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice and asked the Competition and Markets Authority to report by 19 October 2026. The Government says customers should continue receiving service normally and will be contacted directly if a change requires their attention.
