Delisting a sports game does not, by itself, shut down its online modes. A game can leave a store or subscription catalog while its servers remain active. Online features stop working when the publisher retires the services they depend on. Existing owners may still be able to play offline or redownload the game, but those outcomes—and what happens to virtual currency and progress—depend on the specific game, platform, and publisher notice.
Delisting and server shutdown are different events
Delisting means a game is no longer available for purchase, or has been removed from a subscription catalog. Server retirement means the publisher has ended some or all online services. One event does not automatically establish the other: EA’s service-updates policy lists service retirements separately from games leaving EA Play, so a catalog-removal notice alone is not proof that a game’s servers have closed.

If you already own a delisted game, its status depends on more than whether it is still in the store. The game may remain installed or be redownloadable, while particular online modes are unavailable after a service cutoff. Conversely, removal from sale does not by itself prove that the game has lost online functionality.
What happens when the publisher retires online services?
Modes that rely on the publisher’s servers can become unavailable when those services end. Depending on the game, that can include multiplayer, online leagues, shared community content, and modes whose progression or content is tied to an online account. A mode’s name alone does not establish whether it will work offline; look for an explicit statement from the publisher.

Offline play can survive a shutdown, but there is no universal rule about which modes remain, how long servers stay online, or whether online progress can be recovered. Check the notice for your exact title and platform rather than assuming another game’s shutdown rules apply.
Examples show why the exact game matters
| Game and publisher notice | Online-service change | What the notice says remains |
|---|---|---|
| Madden NFL 20 — EA | Online services, support, and in-game purchasing retired April 15, 2024. Madden Points could no longer be purchased from January 15, 2024. | EA said offline modes remained playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Unused Madden Points could not be used after April 15, 2024. Read EA’s notice. |
| NHL 14, NHL 15, NHL 16, NHL 17, and NHL 18 — EA | Servers retired June 6, 2022. | EA said all offline modes remained playable on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Read EA’s notice. |
| NBA 2K25 — 2K | As of 2K’s notice updated October 2, 2026, the game is scheduled to leave sale October 30, 2026, and be discontinued December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, multiplayer and online modes are scheduled to become unavailable. | 2K says existing owners can redownload and play offline, including Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA. MyCAREER, MyTEAM, multiplayer, Online Leagues, and community sharing will be unavailable; players will no longer be able to earn Virtual Currency. Read 2K’s notice. |
The NBA 2K25 dates are scheduled future changes stated in 2K’s notice; they are not evidence that every sports game follows the same timetable. Check the live notice for changes before relying on those dates.

Virtual currency, items, and progress need separate checks
Do not assume that a balance remains usable just because an offline mode survives, or that currency purchases and earning continue until the last day of online play. In the Madden NFL 20 example, EA set separate dates for ending Madden Points purchases and for making unused balances unusable. For NBA 2K25, 2K says earning Virtual Currency will stop after the online cutoff.

EA’s general policy says inventories of virtual currency or in-game items may continue to be usable in some circumstances, even if the game or its in-game store is no longer available. That is not a guarantee for every title, balance, or service. The game-specific notice is the relevant source for what happens to items, currency, and online progression.

How to check your game before a cutoff
- Find the publisher’s service notice for the exact title. Confirm whether services are active, already retired, or scheduled to end, and note the dates and affected features.
- Check the store or subscription notice separately. Determine whether the game is still for sale, has left a subscription catalog, or is no longer available to purchase. Do not treat that status as confirmation of a server shutdown.
- Verify the platform and edition. Look for platform-specific details, including console generation and PC storefront, and confirm that the notice covers your version.
- Look for named offline modes and redownload terms. Rely on an explicit publisher statement rather than assuming an installed copy, disc, or account entitlement guarantees access.
- Check currency and saved progress separately. Confirm any cutoff for earning or spending currency, and whether the notice says anything about items or online progression. Do not assume that online progress can be restored after services end.
Why publishers retire older game services
Electronic Arts says online-service retirement decisions typically arise when the player count falls below 1% of peak online players across all EA titles, a figure EA gives as its typical threshold—not proof that this exact measure triggered a particular game’s shutdown. EA also says older games are replaced by newer releases. That explanation applies to EA’s services; it should not be treated as a rule for other publishers.
There is no established cross-publisher lifespan that lets you predict how many years a sports game’s servers will remain online. For a reliable answer, use the publisher’s current notice for the particular game.
