When a game publisher is acquired, ownership of the company changes—but there is no automatic, universal outcome for your games or accounts. Whether a purchase remains playable depends on the particular license, storefront and publisher accounts, DRM, online-service terms, and consumer protections that apply where you live. An acquisition by itself neither transfers your entitlements nor proves that servers will close or remain available indefinitely.

What an acquisition does—and does not—change

An acquisition changes who controls the publisher. It does not, on its own, rewrite every player’s contract or settle how a specific game will be distributed, supported, or operated. A buyer may change future services or plans, but the deal alone does not answer whether your existing game remains accessible.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) puts the broader digital-purchase question this way: “When you click the ‘buy’ button on a digital product, it really depends.” That consumer alert, published April 18, 2024, is general guidance—not a ruling about a particular game. The result for a game depends on its terms and the applicable law. FTC consumer alert

Do you still own the game you bought?

A store purchase may grant a license, not an unrestricted copy

Digital storefronts may sell a license to use a game rather than a copy that can be freely transferred or played forever. Access can depend on your store account, the platform continuing to operate, DRM, and the game’s own requirements. The FTC explains these general limits in its digital products guidance.

That does not mean an acquisition automatically cancels a license. It means you should read the terms for the specific game and storefront before assuming what happens if the publisher changes hands, a service closes, or an account is restricted.

Account access and game entitlements are different things

Your console or PC store account may hold the purchase entitlement, while a separate publisher account is needed for multiplayer, cross-play, social features, or progression. Linking accounts does not necessarily make either account or its content transferable. For example, Activision’s terms say the company does not recognize transfers of accounts or service-provided content. That is an example of Activision’s terms, not a rule for every publisher. Activision Terms of Use

Can the new owner shut down servers or online features?

Online multiplayer, progression, saves, DLC, virtual items, and account services may rely on the publisher’s systems. A game’s terms and any title-specific shutdown or transition notice matter; so do regional consumer protections. A server shutdown can affect online-dependent features even if a store still shows the game in your library.

Activision’s terms illustrate why broad claims are unsafe: they describe service closure for economic reasons and potential revocation of product or service-content access in certain regions and circumstances. They also set out different conditions and notice language for some regions, including the EEA and UK. These clauses should not be read as proof that every game can be shut down without notice everywhere. Activision Terms of Use and regional terms

What the Microsoft–Activision Blizzard deal changed for EEA cloud streaming

The European Commission’s May 2023 approval summary accepted licensing commitments lasting 10 years to address a cloud-streaming competition concern. For eligible Activision Blizzard PC and console games, the commitments include a free consumer streaming license for EEA residents who hold a license for the game, as well as a corresponding free license for streaming providers serving EEA-based gamers. This remedy is specific to the deal and its stated territory; it is not a global entitlement for every player or game. European Commission decision summary

What the consumer license covers

Microsoft’s summary says licenses taken by consumers or providers during the commitment period endure perpetually, even though the obligations themselves last 10 years. “Perpetually” describes a license taken under this remedy; it does not promise that every game, publisher account, online feature, or subscription will last forever. Microsoft’s FAQ distinguishes a purchased game from subscription access: a consumer with an eligible purchased game can use the consumer license, while a game obtained through a multi-game subscription can be streamed only while the subscription is active and the game remains included. Microsoft says it charges no additional amount beyond the game’s original acquisition cost for the consumer license; a streaming service may still charge its own fee. Provider participation is voluntary. Microsoft’s EEA streaming FAQ

Provider lists and catalogs can change

At the October 13, 2023 closing, Microsoft listed NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Ubitus, Boosteroid, and Nware as providers with streaming agreements. That dated list is not a promise that every provider currently operates, carries every eligible title, or will keep a particular game in its catalog. Microsoft’s closing announcement

Cloud streaming is another access route, not a replacement license

Streaming a game requires sufficient rights to that third-party game; having a cloud-service account alone does not grant them. NVIDIA says users can connect supported game stores to stream games they already own, but not all owned content is streamable. Eligibility and availability may vary by publisher, territory, language, provider, and time. NVIDIA GeForce NOW and NVIDIA terms

Nintendo Wii Console, White Premium Bundle (Renewed)
  • Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
  • Tested and works well. Nice condition

Before relying on cloud play, check the game’s eligibility, your region and device, the store account you need to link, whether the provider participates, any subscription or service fee, and the current catalog. Availability of a streaming service does not guarantee that a publisher will keep a title, account, or online feature operating.

How to check what will happen to a particular game

  1. Identify the entitlement. Check which store or platform account holds the game and whether a separate publisher account is required. Account linking is not proof that an entitlement can be transferred.
  2. Read the applicable terms. Look for clauses on licenses, DRM, account termination, service closure, transfer, and online-only features. Check the version and region that apply to you.
  3. Separate the game’s components. Determine whether DLC, virtual items, saves, progression, and multiplayer depend on publisher services or a specific account.
  4. Look for a game-specific notice. Check official publisher and platform announcements for a transition plan, service change, or shutdown date.
  5. Check whether a remedy applies to you. Confirm the country, game, and entitlement covered. The Microsoft–Activision Blizzard cloud-streaming commitment described above applies to eligible games and EEA consumers, not as a worldwide guarantee.
  6. For cloud play, verify each dependency. Confirm the eligible title, territory, device, linked store account, provider participation, subscription conditions, and current catalog. Treat streaming as a way to access a game you have rights to—not as protection against loss of those rights.

What remains unresolved in the 2026 EU consumer action

The European Commission’s page, dated September 30, 2026, says the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network’s coordinated action concerning Microsoft Corporation and Activision Blizzard is ongoing. It concerns Call of Duty Mobile and Diablo Immortal; listed issues include virtual currencies, data collection, game design, parental controls, pre-contract information, and unilateral account blocking. These are concerns under examination, not final findings of wrongdoing. The Commission says national enforcement measures may be considered if concerns remain. What this means for your purchase

There is no industry-wide rule that guarantees all purchases, accounts, or online services survive an acquisition. For a specific title, the practical answer comes from its license, the accounts and services it requires, any official transition notice, and the law where you live. A deal-specific remedy may add rights in a defined territory, but it should not be generalized beyond its games, users, and conditions.
