If investment slows, AI-dependent companies do not all fail. The impact would depend on whether a company can cover its costs with revenue and cash on hand, or needs fresh funding to keep operating. Those that depend heavily on repeated fundraising or expensive compute commitments could have to cut costs, raise money on less favorable terms, seek a buyer or strategic partner, or shut down. Companies with stronger customer revenue and more cash may have more time to adapt. These are possible outcomes, not a forecast of mass failure.

What does “investment” mean in this context?

A slowdown can affect several kinds of funding, and they are not interchangeable. Venture capital (VC) is money invested in companies, often in exchange for an ownership stake. Corporate AI investment is a broader measure that can include spending and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Borrowing creates debt that a company must repay. A change in one category does not automatically mean the others have also slowed.

The figures below describe different measures, so they should not be added together or treated as estimates of the same funding pool.

Measure What it covers Reported figure
OECD analysis of Preqin data on VC investment in AI firms Global venture capital investment in AI firms USD 258.7 billion in 2025, about 61% of global VC investment, according to the OECD’s 2026 analysis
Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index Global corporate AI investment, including private investment and M&A USD 581.69 billion in 2025

The OECD’s VC measure does not capture all corporate internal investment, government investment, or other forms of capital. Stanford HAI’s broader measure has a different definition and scope.

Is AI investment already falling?

Not in the latest annual figures cited here. OECD analysis reports that global VC investment in AI firms fell from USD 257.3 billion in 2021 to USD 123.6 billion in 2023, then recovered to USD 258.7 billion in 2025. The question of what happens if investment slows is therefore a scenario, not a description of that reported annual trend.

The recovery was concentrated. In 2025, US-based firms attracted about 75% of global AI VC deal value, while mega deals accounted for about 73% of AI investment value, according to the OECD. Those shares describe where the value went and the size of deals; they do not mean that funding was broadly accessible to every AI company.

How could a slowdown affect an AI-dependent company?

The first effect would be on a company’s options, not necessarily its product or customer demand overnight. If new capital becomes harder to secure or more expensive, a company that needs another funding round to cover operating losses may face a longer fundraising process, a lower valuation, greater dilution for existing owners, or no available offer. These are plausible consequences, but the cited sources do not estimate how likely each is across AI companies.

Cash runway and fundraising

Runway is how long a company can continue operating before its available cash runs out, assuming its spending and incoming cash remain broadly similar. A company with high monthly net cash burn and little revenue has less room to wait for funding than one with a longer runway. A financing slowdown can force the first company to seek capital sooner, accept less favorable terms, or reduce its plans.

Revenue versus operating costs

Capital alone does not determine resilience: the relationship between spending and customer revenue matters. Silicon Valley Bank’s H2 2025 State of the Markets report put the median Series A AI company’s burn at USD 5 for each USD 1 of new revenue. That is a cohort statistic for SVB’s Series A AI companies, not a ratio that applies to every AI firm.

Compute and infrastructure commitments

Companies whose products depend on substantial computing capacity may have costs or commitments that are difficult to reduce quickly. Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index reports that compute spending at leading frontier companies increased significantly year over year, but it does not establish that every AI company has the same spending profile.

The Bank of England’s July 2026 Financial Stability Report identifies a potential mismatch when long-term debt is used to finance AI assets with shorter lifecycles. It also notes that much AI-related debt had financed data-centre buildings and facilities, rather than the servers and AI chips inside them. This points to a potential financing vulnerability; it does not establish that all AI companies or infrastructure providers face it.

Confidence and broader market effects

A reassessment of AI’s commercial potential could affect more than a company’s ability to raise money. The Bank of England wrote in its July 2026 Financial Stability Report: “A negative reassessment of the impact of AI could weaken both AI-related earnings and broader growth expectations.” That is a risk channel, not a prediction that such a reassessment will occur.

What outcomes might companies face?

The result would depend on each company’s revenue, cash, costs, financing needs, and ability to change course. A slowdown does not imply a fixed sequence of events.

Company position Possible response or outcome
Customer revenue and cash reserves provide time to operate Continue operating while adjusting growth plans or spending
Growth depends on spending ahead of revenue Reduce hiring, expansion, or other costs to extend runway
A new funding round is needed to cover losses Raise on less favorable terms, secure strategic financing, or find a partner
Funding needs remain high and other options are insufficient Sell the business or close

These are conditional paths, not stages every company will pass through. The sector-level sources cited here do not provide a company-by-company stress test or predict how many firms would close under a particular slowdown.

How can you judge which companies are more exposed?

Use the company’s fundamentals rather than treating “AI company” as a risk category on its own. A useful assessment asks:

  • Cash and burn: How much cash is available, and how quickly is the company using it?
  • Revenue quality: Is customer demand recurring and growing, or does the company need new funding to support operations?
  • Compute commitments: Can infrastructure use and related spending be reduced if growth slows?
  • Dependence on external capital: Can the business continue without another equity round or new borrowing?
  • Debt and asset life: Do repayment obligations extend beyond the useful life of the assets financed?
  • Flexibility: Can the company lower costs or move to a less capital-intensive business model without undermining its product?

These questions help distinguish a firm that uses AI as one input from a business whose product and economics depend centrally on AI. The available sector data does not settle the outlook for any particular company.

Does AI investment crowd out other borrowers?

The Bank of England’s July 2026 Financial Stability Report said: “As of yet, there is little evidence that AI activity is ‘crowding out’ the ability of other businesses or governments to access funding markets.” Concentrated investment and potential debt mismatches are reasons to monitor exposure; they are not evidence that other borrowers are already being displaced.
