When you sell Bitcoin through a custodial exchange, the exchange executes the trade and usually credits your account with a fiat balance or starts a payout. That sale does not necessarily send Bitcoin across the blockchain. In the United States, selling Bitcoin for dollars generally creates a capital gain or loss to calculate and report; trading charges and cash-out costs can reduce what you receive. A later withdrawal to a bank—or a separate transfer of BTC to an external wallet—is another step.

What happens when you sell Bitcoin on an exchange?

A custodial exchange holds or controls the Bitcoin in your account and records trades on its own platform. When you place a sell order, the platform executes it and updates your account balance. You may then have dollars available to withdraw, or the platform may initiate a payout according to the method you choose. An exchange trade like this does not necessarily broadcast a Bitcoin transaction to the blockchain.

How an order executes depends on the platform and order type. Coinbase, for example, says trades made from its Primary Balance execute through its central limit order book or competitive auctions. That is an example of one platform’s process, not a description of every exchange. See Coinbase’s pricing and fee disclosure.

Selling and withdrawing are also separate actions. You can leave the proceeds in your exchange account, withdraw them to a bank or another supported destination, or—before selling—transfer BTC to an external wallet. A wallet transfer moves Bitcoin; a sale exchanges it for something else.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

What fees can reduce your proceeds?

Check the order preview and the withdrawal screen rather than assuming there is one universal fee. Depending on the platform, jurisdiction, payment method, order size, and market conditions, charges may include:

  • Trading fee: An explicit charge for executing the order.
  • Spread: A difference between the quoted buy and sell prices. A simple trade quote may include a spread even when the charge is not presented as a separate line-item trading fee.
  • Cash-out fee: A charge that can depend on the payout method.
  • Network fee: A fee for a separate on-chain transfer of BTC to an external address. This is not the same as an exchange’s trading or cash-out charge.

Coinbase says its simple Trade quote may include a spread, and that charges are calculated at order time using factors that can include payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, and asset. Its trade preview displays the applicable charges. For an off-platform BTC transfer, Coinbase says it estimates the network charge using prevailing fees and discloses the estimate at transaction time; batching and network congestion can cause the estimate to differ from the final network cost. These are Coinbase-specific disclosures, not fixed rates for all platforms. See Coinbase’s explanation of miner fees.

Bitcoin network fees are tied to transaction size, not simply to the amount of BTC being sent. Transactions compete for limited block space, so a higher fee can affect confirmation priority. Bitcoin.org explains the fee market at bitcoin.org/fees. A transfer may wait in the mempool while it awaits confirmation, especially when the fee is low relative to demand.

Does a Bitcoin sale create a taxable gain or loss?

For U.S. federal tax purposes, generally yes: the IRS treats digital assets as property. It says that if you sell digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency, you must recognize any capital gain or loss, subject to limitations on deducting capital losses. See IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions.

The basic calculation compares your adjusted basis with your amount realized. In practical terms, the amount realized is the cash you receive, plus the fair market value of any services received to effect the sale, minus digital-asset transaction costs allocable to the disposition. The IRS identifies commissions, transfer taxes, and transaction or “gas” fees as possible transaction costs. Costs of moving assets between your own wallets or accounts are distinct from costs of a sale or other disposition.

Your basis generally starts with what you paid to acquire the Bitcoin, including qualifying acquisition fees and other acquisition costs. The gain or loss is not necessarily the sale price alone: it depends on that basis, the sale proceeds, and applicable costs. The IRS explains basis and records for virtual-currency transactions in its virtual currency FAQs.

For individuals, capital transactions are generally reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D, subject to the IRS’s stated exception for certain broker-provided Form 1099-DA information. The form does not itself create the tax obligation. Treasury and IRS broker-reporting rules concern information reported by covered brokers; you should reconcile a broker’s information with your own records rather than assume it supplies every basis detail. See the Treasury announcement on final digital asset broker reporting rules.

How the holding period affects classification

Under the IRS’s general rule, a Bitcoin held for one year or less before sale produces short-term capital gain or loss; a holding period longer than one year generally produces long-term treatment. The holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date. This classification does not, by itself, determine your tax rate or final tax bill, which depend on your circumstances.

What records should you keep?

Keep enough information to identify the Bitcoin sold, determine its basis, and support the proceeds and costs you report. The IRS describes specific-unit identification and recordkeeping for digital assets. A useful record set includes:

  • Acquisition date and time, amount acquired, and fair market value at acquisition.
  • Basis, including relevant acquisition fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs.
  • Sale or disposition date and time, amount sold, and fair market value at disposal.
  • Money or other property received, plus transaction costs allocable to the sale.
  • Records that show which units you sold if using specific-unit identification.

Keep exchange statements and transaction confirmations alongside your own acquisition records. A broker report may not contain all the information needed to establish your basis, particularly for assets acquired elsewhere or transferred between wallets. Check the instructions for the applicable tax year and your circumstances before filing.

When do the dollars or Bitcoin arrive?

There are two different timing questions: when a platform completes a sale or payout, and when a Bitcoin network transfer receives confirmation. A platform’s payout methods, charges, and timing vary; use its order preview and withdrawal details for the transaction rather than treating any general estimate as a guarantee. Blockchain confirmation does not determine when fiat funds arrive in a bank account.

If you transfer BTC on-chain, the transaction must be included in a block to receive confirmation. Bitcoin.org says blocks are added about every ten minutes on average, but that is not a deadline for an individual transaction. Confirmation timing depends on network conditions and the transaction’s fee priority. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes a confirmation as network consensus that the received bitcoins have not been sent to someone else and are considered the recipient’s property.

Do the tax rules differ by country?

Yes. The calculation and reporting above describe U.S. federal rules, not worldwide tax treatment. As one example of jurisdictional variation, HMRC says a person may need to pay Capital Gains Tax when they make a gain by selling, exchanging, or giving away cryptoasset tokens. See HMRC guidance on tax when selling cryptoassets. Consult the tax authority for your jurisdiction and tax year for rules that apply to you.
