An NHL player’s pay and benefits after an AHL assignment depend on separate rules. The player’s Standard Player Contract (SPC) sets the applicable NHL and minor-league salary terms; a specific NHL/NHLPA provision extends certain NHL insurance benefits only to qualifying players. The word “demotion” alone does not tell you whether the player’s pay changes or which coverage continues.
Does an NHL player’s salary go down when he is sent to the AHL?
It can, but there is no universal pay cut for an AHL assignment. The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) defines “Paragraph 1 NHL Salary” and “Paragraph 1 Minor League Salary” as distinct terms, and “Paragraph 1 Salary” encompasses both. The applicable SPC terms determine which salary applies during an assignment. The NHL’s CBA index links to the governing agreement and its amendments, including memoranda of understanding (MOUs).
If a player’s SPC specifies different NHL and minor-league salary amounts, the relevant rate may change for the period covered by the applicable contract terms. Without the player’s contract and assignment dates, a precise amount cannot be established. There is no supported league-wide average pay cut or standard reduction percentage.

These labels are shorthand for contract salary terms, not a substitute for reading the SPC. A one-way contract does not, by itself, answer every question about benefits; a two-way contract does not establish one standard AHL salary for every player. For a particular player, check the NHL and minor-league salary amounts in the SPC and the dates the assignment applied.

A June 27, 2025 NHL/NHLPA MOU addresses minor-league compensation for rookies in the Entry Level System (ELS): those SPCs are deemed two-way, and a schedule limits minor-league compensation by draft year. That specific rookie rule does not establish a universal AHL rate for all NHL players. Read the NHL/NHLPA MOU on ELS minor-league compensation.
Which NHL benefits can continue during an AHL assignment?
A July 10, 2020 NHL/NHLPA MOU says that players with a one-way SPC and at least 160 NHL games played continue to be entitled to and covered by NHL health, life, and disability insurance when assigned to the minors. For goalies, games dressed count toward the threshold. The MOU also says offseason coverage continues to the same extent as for other NHL players. Consult the NHLPA’s CBA materials.

The provision has conditions; it is not a blanket promise that every assigned player keeps every NHL benefit. Disability coverage is subject to market availability, and the amount may be reduced for claims incurred while the player is assigned to the minors. The cited MOU establishes these terms as of 2020; it does not, on its own, establish whether later agreement documents changed this provision. For a current player-specific answer, consult the current CBA/MOU text or the NHLPA/Health Fund Office.

The AHL’s agreement with the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) addresses AHL minimum salary, per diem, travel, lodging, and health and welfare benefits. PHPA also describes off-ice coverage for qualifying opening-night roster players under specified agreement or professional tryout (PTO) status. These are AHL/PHPA provisions, not the same thing as NHL insurance under the NHL/NHLPA CBA. See the PHPA agreement overview.

What changes in the 2026–27 season?
The NHL says the new agreement’s provisions take effect when the 2026–27 season begins; its prior CBA remains in force through 2025–26. Under the new assignment procedure, a player assigned to the AHL must appear in a minor-league game before the NHL club recalls him. The NHL says the rule ends “paper assignments,” in which a player could continue traveling with the NHL team and return after a day. This is a roster-procedure change, not evidence of a universal salary or benefits adjustment. See the NHL’s explainer of the 2025 agreement and 2026–27 changes.

- Salary: The NHL and minor-league salary terms in the player’s SPC, plus the assignment dates.
- Benefits: Whether the player meets the cited one-way SPC and 160 NHL games threshold, which benefit is at issue, and any disability limitation. Verify whether current agreement documents have changed the cited 2020 provision.
- Season and procedure: Whether the assignment falls before or during the 2026–27 season, when the appearance-before-recall rule takes effect.
- AHL coverage: Any applicable AHL/PHPA eligibility terms, considered separately from NHL coverage.
League-wide sources do not disclose an individual player’s SPC or benefit enrollment. Without those details, do not report a precise AHL salary or claim that the player retains all NHL benefits.
