An AHL call-up is normally a recall under a player’s existing NHL contract, not a new contract. For a recall before 5:00 p.m. New York time, the NHL/NHLPA CBA says the player’s NHL Paragraph 1 salary starts on the recall date. Whether that changes the player’s salary rate depends mainly on whether his contract is one-way or two-way.
How a call-up affects salary
The NHL contract, often called a Standard Player’s Contract (SPC), sets the player’s salary terms. A recall changes the level at which the player is serving under that contract; it does not, by itself, mean he has signed a new deal. The CBA player notice says: “If you are Recalled to an NHL Club prior to 5:00 PM New York time on a particular day, your Paragraph 1 NHL Salary shall commence on the date of Recall.” (NHL/NHLPA CBA, player notice)
The salary trigger described there is the recall transaction and its timing—not whether the player appears in an NHL game. The cited notice does not establish what happens to the start date for recalls at or after 5:00 p.m. New York time, so that case requires checking the full applicable CBA text rather than assuming the same-day rule applies.

With a two-way contract, a qualifying recall means the NHL rate applies from the date identified by the CBA rule. The amount cannot be worked out from “two-way” alone: the player’s contract supplies the rates, and the applicable calculation method must also be confirmed before deriving a daily figure.

Salary is separate from waivers, cap accounting and take-home pay
“One-way” and “two-way” describe salary rates; they do not determine whether a player must clear waivers to be assigned or recalled. Waiver eligibility is a separate CBA question. Likewise, NHL salary commencement does not by itself establish the club’s cap charge, the timing of cash payment, bonuses, taxes or take-home pay. Those are distinct issues that depend on the relevant contract terms and rules. The NHL’s current CBA materials and July 2025 memorandum of understanding are available through the official CBA index and the July 2025 MOU.
Current AHL assignment-and-recall procedure
The CBA effective September 16, 2026 runs through September 15, 2030. The NHL’s explainer for the 2026–27 agreement says a player assigned to the AHL must appear in a minor-league game before his NHL club recalls him again. That is a procedural condition for a subsequent recall after assignment, distinct from the rule that determines when NHL salary commences. The explainer also lists the NHL minimum salary as $850,000 for the 2026–27 season, with scheduled increases afterward. That is a league-wide minimum, not the assumed salary or recall rate for any particular player; an individual contract may specify a higher NHL salary.

- Confirm the official recall date and whether it occurred before 5:00 p.m. New York time.
- Check the current full CBA and applicable MOU for the recall category, assignment procedure and any waiver question.
The NHL’s CBA and MOU index links to the governing materials. Those documents, together with the player’s SPC and transaction details, are needed to resolve an individual compensation or eligibility question.
