Cold weather can substantially reduce an electric car’s driving range, mainly because heating the cabin and sometimes the battery uses energy that could otherwise move the car. Cold also reduces the battery’s available energy. How much range you lose depends on the vehicle, temperature, heating system, route, speed, and test conditions—so published percentages are useful reference points, not a prediction for every driver.
How much range can an EV lose in cold weather?
Two controlled test programs give a sense of the possible impact, but they used different vehicles and procedures:
| Test | Cold-weather result | Conditions and comparison |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Department of Energy program record summarizing Argonne National Laboratory tests | 41% average BEV range decrease | Three model-year 2019–2020 BEVs tested on a chassis dynamometer using EPA driving cycles at 20°F, compared with 72°F ambient temperature; cabin maintained at 72°F. DOE, September 23, 2024. |
| AAA chassis-dynamometer study | 39.0% calculated driving-range decrease; 35.6% MPGe decrease | Three EVs tested at 20°F, 75°F, and 95°F with HVAC set to 72°F; the range comparison is against 75°F. AAA, May 1, 2026. |
These results are close, but they are not measurements of the same cars under identical conditions. They should not be averaged or treated as a universal winter-range figure. Your car’s observed range in your climate and on your routes is a better planning reference.

Why does range fall in the cold?
Cabin and battery heating draw power
The DOE identifies onboard heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) energy use as the primary cause of the range differences in its analysis. Heating the cabin—and, where needed, conditioning the battery—uses electricity that would otherwise be available for driving. DOE technical record.

Cold reduces usable battery energy
Low temperatures slow battery chemical reactions and can reduce output voltage and available capacity. The result is less usable energy for the trip. Battery heaters can partly offset this effect, but their presence and operation vary by vehicle. DOE technical record.
Vehicle design and driving conditions matter
Range effects vary with battery thermal management, HVAC technology, driving pattern, speed, acceleration, idle time, and road grade. A short trip can also devote a larger share of its energy to initially warming the car than a longer drive. The test results above therefore cannot predict an individual vehicle’s outcome.
Heat pumps help, but do not eliminate losses
DOE says heat-pump HVAC systems typically use notably less power than systems relying only on electric resistance heat. In extreme cold, however, heat pumps become less effective and resistance heating may provide more of the heat load. Not every EV has a heat pump, and having one does not prevent winter range loss. DOE technical record.

Do electric cars work in winter?
Yes. Reduced range does not mean an EV cannot operate in winter. DOE’s technical record says commercially available battery-electric vehicles can meet driving requirements in extreme weather and maintain cabin comfort for extended periods under the studied conditions. That finding is not a guarantee for every journey or a substitute for planning around weather, charging access, and the car’s actual range. DOE technical record.

- Efficient, Energy-Saving, and Fast Charging: The TowerTop 12v battery charger offers 4 adjustable current settings (2A/10A/25A/AUTO) to meet your diverse needs. With a max charging current of 25A, you can fully charge a 100Ah battery in under 3.5 hours. Achieving an 85% charging efficiency (industry average 75%), this battery chargers is more efficient, increasing charging speed by 1640% compared to 2A car battery charger. Not only is it energy-efficient, but it also saves you a lot of wait time
- Fully Automatic Charging for Convenience and Safety: This 12 volt battery charger automatically detects battery status and starts charging automatically within 30 seconds if you forget to press Start. After a full charge, it enters pulse repair mode, turns off the screen to save energy, and maintains a safe voltage for long-term storage. If voltage drops, it restores full power. The smart battery charger also remembers your last settings, ensuring seamless operation even after a power outage
- All-in-One Compatible Design: Designed for 12V sealed lead-acid batteries in cars, boats, RVs, power sports, and deep-cycle batteries, including 12V STD, AGM, GEL, Wet, MF, EFB, calcium and deep-cycle batteries
- HD LCD Screen and 8-Stage Intelligent Charging: With true 8-stage smart charging (desulfurization, soft start, bulk charge, absorption, analysis, repair, float, and pulse maintenance), it optimizes battery life and repairs batteries without overcharging or damaging them. The HD LCD screen allows you to view the charging stage and parameters at any time rather than leaving you guessing, keeping you informed of the charging status
- Battery Repair: Independent desulfurization and repair buttons allow you to manually desulfurize and repair your battery to restore lost battery performance, helping to revive old/idle batteries and extend battery life. If your battery cannot be charged, you can try the "repair" mode to fix it. Note: It cannot repair completely drained batteries
How to plan for winter driving and charging
Use your own winter range as the starting point
Expect a shorter range in cold conditions and allow a margin based on your vehicle’s observed performance, the forecast, route, and charger access. AAA advises cold-climate drivers to anticipate reduced range and potentially more frequent charging stops. AAA, May 1, 2026.
Precondition while plugged in
If your vehicle supports it, warm the cabin and battery before departure while the car is still connected to a charger. This lets the initial warming draw less from the energy reserved for the trip. The feature and how it works are vehicle-specific. DOE, “Winterizing Your Electric Vehicle,” January 30, 2024.
Use targeted comfort features
When available, heated seats or a heated steering wheel can provide comfort without relying solely on warming all the cabin air. AAA lists targeted heating and preconditioning among its efficiency strategies. Stay warm enough to drive safely; comfort and visibility should not be sacrificed to preserve range. AAA, May 1, 2026.

- Safety Protections: Equipped with 8 layers of protection, including reverse polarity, short circuit, overheating, and overcurrent safeguards, this charger ensures safe operation. With automatic temperature compensation, the charger delivers optimal voltage whether it’s summer or winter.
- Battery Maintenance & Recovery: The integrated pulse repair function detects and reverses battery sulfation and acid stratification in lead-acid batteries, extending battery life. This feature helps recover aging or partially drained batteries, extending their life and functionality.
Protect outdoor charging connections
Heavy snow or sleet can cause an outdoor charging connector to freeze. DOE suggests a magnetic inlet cover or bag as a possible precaution; follow the vehicle and charger makers’ instructions and verify accessory compatibility. A connector cover protects the charging connection—it does not improve driving range. DOE, “Winterizing Your Electric Vehicle,” January 30, 2024.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Winter traction is a separate safety issue
Winter tires may be appropriate where conditions call for them, and AAA advises easing acceleration and braking on slippery roads. These are traction and safety measures; the cited guidance does not establish a universal range benefit from winter tires. AAA Oregon/Idaho, “Electric Vehicle Winter Driving Tips”.
What to compare when choosing an EV
- Heating system: Check whether the specific model has a heat pump, and consider its limits in extreme cold.
- Battery thermal management: Find out whether the vehicle can condition its battery and whether preconditioning is available.
- Cold-weather evidence: Look for results for the exact model and note the test temperature, cabin setting, and baseline used.
- Your use case: Match the vehicle’s likely winter range to your routes, charging access, and local electricity costs.
Do not rank models based only on fleet-level percentages from different tests; the cited DOE and AAA results do not establish a model-by-model comparison.
Cold-weather charging costs are time- and location-dependent
In AAA’s 2026 analysis, estimated cold-weather operating costs rose by $32.11 per 1,000 miles for EVs charged at home and $76.93 per 1,000 miles using public charging. AAA calculated those figures using its national fuel and electricity prices as of March 27, 2026, so they are not universal bills or timeless estimates. AAA, May 1, 2026.
