A Wi-Fi outage usually disables remote app features, not necessarily the controls on the device. A power outage is different: a battery-powered smart lock may keep working, while a thermostat’s temporary internal battery cannot power your home’s heating or cooling equipment. What remains available depends on the model, its power source, and its battery condition.
Power outage vs. Wi-Fi outage: what changes?
These failures affect different parts of a smart-home setup. A device can have power and work locally while its connection to the app or cloud is down. Conversely, a device with a temporary internal battery may stay on for a while after household power fails, then shut down as that backup runs out.
| Situation | What may still work | What may stop working |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi or internet outage | Local controls, if the device has power and the model supports offline operation | App control, remote access, alerts, or cloud-dependent features |
| Household power outage | A battery-powered lock may continue operating; a thermostat may remain on temporarily using its internal battery | Powered HVAC equipment may stop, and a thermostat may eventually shut down when its backup charge is depleted |
An app showing a device as offline does not by itself mean its keypad, thumb turn, or on-device controls have stopped working.
What happens to a smart lock?
When household power goes out
Many residential smart locks have their own batteries, separate from household electricity. Schlage says its residential electronic and smart locks are battery-operated and continue functioning during a power outage, subject to the lock’s battery condition and model-specific functions. Check the manual for your exact lock rather than assuming every model behaves the same way. Schlage’s power-outage guidance was updated August 1, 2025.

When Wi-Fi or internet goes out
Local entry may remain available even when you cannot operate the lock from an app or receive alerts. For the Nest × Yale Lock, Google says the lock communicates with Nest Connect over a low-power connection; Nest Connect then uses Wi-Fi to communicate with the app. The lock itself does not connect directly to Wi-Fi. Google says most passcodes work while the lock is offline, but scheduled-access passcodes are an exception. App control and alerts are unavailable during the outage. Google’s Nest × Yale offline guidance explains the behavior and connection setup.
Google also says the Nest × Yale deadbolt can be locked or unlocked from inside even if power is out or Wi-Fi is down. Do not generalize that statement to other locks; check the documentation for your model and keep its physical backup method in mind. Google’s Nest × Yale product guidance describes the inside thumb turn and other model-specific details.

Google documents a temporary emergency-power method for this model: hold a 9V alkaline battery to the terminals at the bottom of the lock, enter a passcode, then replace the lock’s batteries. This is specific to the Nest × Yale Lock; do not try it on another smart lock unless its manufacturer documents the same procedure. Follow Google’s instructions for the Nest × Yale Lock.

When Wi-Fi or internet goes out
A Nest thermostat that is offline cannot be controlled in the app, according to Google. If the thermostat itself remains powered and responsive, you can still use its on-device controls to set the temperature. The loss of app access does not establish that the thermostat’s local controls have failed. See Google’s offline troubleshooting guidance for Nest thermostats.

When household power goes out
Google says Nest thermostats can draw on an internal battery for a while when system power is lost. To conserve charge, they may disable Wi-Fi and other features; if power does not return, the thermostat can eventually shut down. Google does not give one universal runtime for this temporary backup in the guidance cited here, so do not assume a particular number of hours. Google’s thermostat power troubleshooting guidance describes this behavior.
The thermostat’s backup battery is not a backup power supply for a furnace, boiler, heat pump, or air conditioner. Whether heating or cooling continues during an outage depends on the HVAC equipment’s power source and any separate backup system. A thermostat staying on briefly does not mean the equipment it controls has electricity.

What to check before an outage
- Identify the exact model. Offline passcode rules, bridges, and emergency-power procedures vary by product.
- Check the lock’s battery condition. A battery-operated lock’s ability to work depends on its batteries having charge.
- Know which controls are local. Confirm how to operate the lock at the door or the thermostat at the wall without the app.
- Check the connection path. Some locks use a separate bridge or hub to reach the home network. Google says Nest Connect is the bridge for Nest × Yale; Nest Guard can no longer serve that role. Verify current support if you have a legacy setup.
- Plan separately for HVAC power. If heat or cooling during a power outage matters, check the equipment’s power requirements and backup arrangements rather than relying on the thermostat’s battery.
For product-specific exceptions, consult the current Nest × Yale offline guidance and Nest thermostat offline guidance.
