A furniture store closing does not automatically cancel every warranty—but it also does not mean the manufacturer must honor promises made only by the retailer. The key is to identify who made each promise: the furniture manufacturer, the retailer, or a separate protection-plan company. Check the warranty or plan documents and contact the named company directly. In the United States, the outcome can also depend on state law and the retailer’s insolvency or bankruptcy process.

First, identify who made the coverage promise

Start with the warranty certificate, sales paperwork, and any protection-plan contract. The company named as the warrantor or contract provider matters more than the store name on the receipt.

  • Manufacturer warranty: The furniture maker may have promised to repair or replace covered defects. Contact the maker named in the warranty, even if claims were usually handled by the retailer.
  • Retailer warranty: If the store made its own written promise, the manufacturer does not automatically become responsible for it just because it made the furniture. The effect of the store’s closure may depend on the promise, state law, and any insolvency proceedings.
  • Separate protection plan: An extended service contract is generally a separate agreement. Its provider or administrator may be a company other than the store that sold it.

The FTC explains that, under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the party that actually makes a written warranty is responsible for that warranty. A seller that only distributes a product covered by another company’s written warranty is not liable under the Act for that other company’s failure to perform. See the FTC’s Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law.

How to check a furniture warranty or protection plan

  1. Find the documents. Gather the receipt, warranty certificate, protection-plan contract, and any claim emails or letters.
  2. Look for the responsible company. Find the named warrantor on the warranty and the obligor or provider on the service contract. Note any administrator, service network, mailing address, phone number, or claim website.
  3. Read what the coverage promises. Check the term, covered defects, exclusions, claim deadlines, and whether the document says service must be arranged through the retailer.
  4. Contact the named company. Ask whether it is accepting claims, what documentation it needs, and whether a successor or authorized service company handles claims if the retailer is no longer operating.
  5. Keep a record. Save the company’s response and, if it denies a claim, request the denial and the specific warranty or contract provision in writing.

The FTC distinguishes a separately purchased service contract from a product warranty: the company making the service contract is responsible for ensuring its terms are disclosed. The plan itself should therefore identify whom to contact and how to submit a claim.

What if the manufacturer normally relied on the retailer?

Some furniture makers route post-sale service through retailers, but that is not a universal industry arrangement. Magnussen Home, for example, says it relies on retailers to provide service after a sale and also lists a Customer Care contact. If the retailer is unavailable, contact the manufacturer and ask whether it will accept the claim directly or refer you to an authorized service provider. Magnussen’s FAQ describes that company’s approach, not a rule for every furniture brand: Magnussen Home FAQ.

What if the retailer itself made the promise?

Do not assume that a retailer’s own warranty transfers to the manufacturer. Keep the store’s warranty, advertisements, emails, and other written statements alongside proof of purchase. A store closure, liquidation, or bankruptcy can affect how a claim is pursued, and the available remedy may depend on state law and the specific insolvency process. The FTC’s federal guide does not determine the result in an individual case.

Implied-warranty rights—such as warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose—can arise under state law. Federal law also limits when a seller that offers a written warranty or service contract may disclaim implied warranties. These general principles do not establish what a particular buyer can recover after a retailer closes; the contract, jurisdiction, and circumstances matter.
