In India, missing a credit-card payment or personal-loan EMI can make the amount overdue and lead to interest or charges under your lender’s terms. The timelines differ: RBI rules allow card late charges and past-due reporting only after the account has remained past due for more than three days, while a term loan generally becomes an NPA only after principal or interest is overdue for more than 90 days. Neither threshold is a free grace period: the amount is due on the date in your statement or loan schedule, and contractual charges may apply sooner.

What happens first after you miss a payment?

The unpaid amount becomes overdue from its stated due date. The lender may apply interest or charges according to your card terms or loan agreement. The exact amount depends on the product and lender; check your current statement, schedule of charges, and repayment schedule rather than relying on a general fee estimate.

RBI requires loan agreements to state exact due dates, repayment frequency, and the breakup of principal and interest. For a personal loan, the lender tracks overdue amounts from the due date; intermediate Special Mention Account (SMA) categories may apply before NPA classification. A later regulatory classification does not erase the missed installment or stop applicable contractual charges.

How the rules differ by product

Situation Relevant RBI threshold What it means
Personal-loan term EMI More than 90 days overdue for principal or interest The loan is generally classified as a non-performing asset (NPA) at this point. It is overdue before then, and the threshold is not a no-cost grace period. RBI Master Circular
Credit-card past-due reporting or late fee More than three days past the statement’s due date The issuer may report the account as past due to a credit information company or levy a late-payment charge only if it remains past due beyond this threshold. The charge is computed from the statement’s due date. RBI Master Circular
Credit-card NPA classification Minimum amount due not fully paid within 90 days of the statement due date The card account is classified as an NPA under the cited rule. This is separate from the earlier threshold for late charges or past-due reporting. RBI Master Circular

If you miss a personal-loan EMI

The EMI is overdue from its contractual due date if the lender has not received it. Interest at the contracted rate can continue on unpaid interest, including an unpaid EMI, until the account is brought current. RBI says penal charges for default must be reasonable and based on the amount in default; a penal charge itself cannot be capitalized to generate further interest. The applicable rate and fees depend on your agreement. RBI FAQ on penal charges

Do not wait for an account to approach NPA status before acting. Contact the lender for the current overdue total and ask how to bring the account current. The lender may track overdue status in stages before NPA classification.

If you miss a credit-card payment or card EMI

Use the statement’s due date and minimum amount due to understand your position. If the minimum amount remains unpaid, the account can pass the card-specific late-charge and reporting threshold after more than three days, and the NPA threshold is 90 days without fully paying the minimum due. The issuer’s fee schedule and interest rate determine the rupee cost.

Paying the minimum does not clear the balance

Paying at least the minimum due can avoid the specific situation in which the minimum remains unpaid, but it does not mean the full statement has been cleared. If you do not pay the total amount due, the interest-free period is lost and interest may apply to the outstanding balance. RBI warns that repeatedly paying only the minimum can stretch repayment over months or years while interest compounds. Late fees and related delay charges are applied to the outstanding amount after the due date, not the full billed amount. RBI credit-card FAQ RBI guidance on credit-card dues

Will one missed EMI affect your CIBIL score?

There is no universal score-point reduction established for a missed EMI. Outcomes depend on the lender’s reporting, the credit bureau, timing, and whether the account remains unpaid. RBI’s card rules set a threshold for past-due reporting and require prior intimation before an issuer reports default status; they do not promise that every lender will report every case in the same way. Prolonged nonpayment may appear in your credit records and matter to future credit assessment, but no particular score drop can be predicted from the information available here.

Review your credit report if you are concerned. If it shows an incorrect missed-payment status, raise a documented dispute with the lender and the bureau.

What to do after missing a payment

  1. Check the due date and amount. Review the card statement or loan agreement, including the unpaid amount, fee schedule, interest terms, and how payments are posted.
  2. Pay promptly if you can. Ask the lender for the amount needed to bring the account current, then keep the receipt or payment confirmation.
  3. Contact the lender if you cannot pay in full. Ask what arrangements are available. A moratorium, waiver, restructuring, or payment plan is not guaranteed by the rules cited here.
  4. Document posting or debit problems. Keep bank records if a payment was made or an automatic debit failed, and file a documented complaint with the lender.
  5. Check the account and credit record afterward. Confirm that the payment has posted and raise any inaccurate delinquency information with the lender and bureau.

How to interpret the timelines

The three-day card threshold and 90-day NPA thresholds are regulatory reporting and classification rules, not permission to pay late without consequences. Your contractual due date still matters; check your lender’s terms for charges and interest that may apply before those thresholds.
