A reusable water bottle that stays damp and goes unwashed can develop residue, biofilm, bacteria or mold—especially around its lid, straw, mouthpiece and seals. That can cause unpleasant film, odor or taste, and mold may trigger symptoms in some people. A dirty bottle does not inevitably make you sick, and the available sources do not quantify the illness risk from any particular bottle.
What can build up in an unwashed bottle?
Water alone does not clean a bottle. Repeated contact with hands and the mouth, plus moisture left inside, can create conditions for buildup. Biofilm may appear as a slimy film, and residue can collect where a brush or rinse does not easily reach. Phoebe Baker’s September 2025 article for UNH Extension, “What’s Living In Your Water Bottle?”, describes this concern; Cleveland Clinic also notes that water-dependent bacteria and molds can grow.
The lid, mouthpiece, straw, slider and gasket deserve particular attention. They have small surfaces and crevices where moisture and residue can linger even when the bottle body looks clean.

Cleveland Clinic lists these possible signs of mold or buildup. They are warning clues, not a laboratory diagnosis:

- Visible spots or growth
- A persistent unpleasant smell
- Cloudy water
- A film or residue inside the bottle or on its parts
- An unusual taste
If the liquid smells strange or you see mold, do not drink it. Empty the bottle, take apart the removable pieces, clean them thoroughly, and let everything dry fully before using it again. The Associated Press gave the same advice about liquid in a bottle with visible mold or an odd smell in its November 8, 2025 report, “How and when to clean your reusable water bottle.”
Can a dirty bottle make you sick?
It can be a source of exposure, but illness is not an inevitable result of using a neglected bottle. Cleveland Clinic describes possible stomach upset, allergic reactions and respiratory symptoms associated with mold exposure; infections are described as rare. Concern is greater for people with mold sensitivities, asthma or other lung conditions, or weakened immune systems. No reviewed source provides a reliable probability of illness from a particular bottle or a specific number of days without washing.

A few accidental sips are unlikely to cause side effects for many people, according to Cleveland Clinic, but reactions vary. If you develop concerning symptoms, or have a health condition that makes mold exposure more concerning, seek medical advice rather than trying to diagnose the cause yourself. Do not assume a particular mold or “black mold” is present based on appearance alone.
How often should you wash a reusable bottle?
The reviewed sources do not establish one universal safe interval. Their practical recommendations differ:

A simple target is to wash the bottle daily and give it a more thorough scrub weekly. Wash it daily if it holds anything besides water—particularly sugary drinks, protein shakes or exercise drinks—because residue from those beverages can feed bacteria. The CDC’s general guidance on water-using devices says to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, but it does not set a reusable water-bottle washing schedule.

- Empty it and take it apart. Remove the lid, straw, mouthpiece and seals when the design allows. Keep track of small pieces so they can be cleaned and dried separately.
- Check the care instructions. Look at the bottle or manufacturer’s website before putting any part in a dishwasher or using a stronger cleaning method. Materials and seals do not all tolerate the same treatment.
- Wash every surface. Use dish soap and warm or hot water as the care instructions permit. Scrub the inside of the bottle, the lid, mouthpiece, straw and crevices. A water-bottle brush can reach a narrow bottom; use a straw-cleaning brush inside a reusable straw.
- Rinse and dry completely. Rinse off soap, then leave the parts separated to air-dry fully before reassembly or storage. Trapped moisture can undermine the point of cleaning.
For ordinary cleaning, soap, water, scrubbing, rinsing and thorough drying are the best-supported practical routine. UNH Extension suggests a baking-soda and vinegar mixture for buildup, while Cleveland Clinic suggests a diluted vinegar soak as a deeper-clean option. These are not universal disinfection protocols: check material-care directions, and never mix cleaning products. CDC guidance distinguishing cleaning from disinfection is general surface-cleaning context, not bottle-specific instructions.

Does the kind of bottle matter?
You do not need to replace a bottle just because it has ordinary buildup. The useful question is whether you can clean and inspect it properly. UNH Extension notes these trade-offs:

- Removable parts: A lid and mouthpiece that come apart are easier to clean thoroughly.
- Interior access: Choose a shape that a brush can reach, especially at the bottom and around the neck.
- Dishwasher instructions: Check the specific manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming a bottle or its lid is dishwasher-safe.
- Visibility and durability: Clear glass makes buildup easier to see and is less likely to scratch, but it can shatter. Metal is durable but opaque. Plastic is more susceptible to scratching; avoid abrasive scrubbing that may damage its surface.
If a bottle is damaged or its parts are too difficult to inspect and clean, replacing it may be practical. For routine residue, though, careful cleaning—not buying another bottle—is the first step.
