Deleting files inside a Windows user-profile folder can remove that account’s documents, Desktop items, application data, settings, and registry-based preferences. The exact damage depends on what you delete. The notation C:Usersl* is ambiguous: it could refer to one folder whose name starts with “l” or match several folders. Identify the exact target before deleting anything.
What is stored in a Windows user profile?
A Windows user profile is more than a collection of personal documents. It includes a registry hive named NTuser.dat, which Windows loads at sign-in and maps to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, as well as profile folders used for items such as Desktop, Start menu, and Documents. See Microsoft’s About User Profiles.
Profile-related locations have different roles. C:Users can contain individual users’ profiles as well as the Default profile; it is not one interchangeable stash of disposable files. Some applications also store per-user data and configuration in AppData. Deleting that data may remove application state even when ordinary documents are elsewhere.
What could be lost or disrupted?
- Personal files: Documents, Desktop contents, and other files kept in the profile may be lost if deleted and not backed up.
- Settings and preferences: Removing
NTuser.dataffects registry-based preferences and configuration for that profile. - Application data: Removing AppData or other per-user application folders can discard settings or stored state. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options documentation notes that some AppData locations are not preserved by the “Keep my files” reset process, while File History versioning data is preserved.
- App setup and sign-ins: After profile damage, some applications may need reconfiguration or reinstallation, and Store apps may require signing in again.
These consequences do not mean Windows will always fail to start, or that it will automatically create a clean, usable profile after files are removed. The outcome depends on which files are deleted, when the deletion occurs, and how Windows and individual applications use them.

Why C:Usersl* needs clarification
The asterisk is commonly used as a wildcard, but the path alone does not establish which directories a deletion command or tool will match. It might mean one profile folder beginning with “l,” or multiple matching folders. Those matches could include accounts other than the one you intend to change. Windows also uses distinct directories such as Default and individual user profiles.
Before taking action, inspect the actual directory names and confirm whether you mean to remove the folder itself or only selected contents. Do not run a deletion against a wildcard until you have verified every target. If unsure, stop and ask someone familiar with Windows profile recovery to identify the paths.

What to do if you have not deleted anything yet
- Back up the files you care about to a separate location before changing profile contents.
- Check that the backup includes the relevant folders and that prior versions are available if you need to recover an earlier copy. File History is one Windows feature that can retain file versions, but its presence in Windows documentation does not mean it is enabled or that a usable backup exists on your PC.
- Confirm the exact profile folder and selected contents rather than assuming a wildcard refers to one account.
What to do if a profile is already corrupted
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft’s corrupted user profile guidance recommends creating a new account, signing in to it, copying accessible files from the old profile, and then restarting into the new account.

This process is for a corrupted profile, not a guarantee that deleted files can be recovered. It depends on the old files still being accessible. Microsoft also notes that email in an email program may need to be imported separately, some applications may need reconfiguration or reinstallation, and Store apps may require another sign-in.
