A cracked iPhone XR back can expose you to sharp glass and means you should no longer count on the phone’s original water resistance. Keep it dry, avoid handling loose fragments, and arrange an assessment with a qualified repair provider. Apple warns against using an iPhone with cracked glass because it may cause injury.
What a cracked iPhone XR back means
Glass may cut you
Cracked or loose pieces can injure your fingers. Apple’s safety guidance says not to use an iPhone with cracked glass. If the back is shedding fragments, stop handling the phone and avoid trying to press pieces back into place. A case or tape may help contain loose shards temporarily, but it does not repair the damage or make the phone safe to use.
If the phone or battery appears damaged, stop using it. Apple warns that suspected device or battery damage can lead to overheating or injury. Contact a qualified service provider rather than opening the phone yourself.
Do not rely on water resistance
Apple lists iPhone XR among models tested for splash, water, and dust resistance under controlled conditions. Apple also says resistance is not permanent and can decrease through normal wear. It does not specify how much a particular crack changes protection, so treat a damaged phone as vulnerable to liquid: keep it dry and avoid exposing it to rain, spills, or sinks.

Apple also advises avoiding impacts and disassembly. A cracked back is not a reason to test the phone’s resistance by getting it wet.
What to do right away
- Check for loose glass or other damage. Avoid touching exposed shards. If the phone or battery looks damaged, stop using it and seek service.
- Keep the phone dry. Do not assume the XR’s original resistance remains dependable after physical damage.
- If it has been exposed to liquid, disconnect cables. Do not charge it while wet. Apple says to allow at least five hours before cable charging after liquid exposure and to ensure the device is dry before placing it on a compatible wireless charger. This is Apple’s liquid-handling guidance; it does not mean every cracked back causes a charging problem.
- Arrange an assessment. Contact Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or another suitably qualified repair provider. Ask what repair method is available for your model and location, whether the inspection found additional damage, and what service terms apply.
How iPhone XR back repair may work
Replacing the rear glass is not necessarily a simple glass-only job. iFixit describes the XR repair as complicated and says broken back glass requires replacement of the entire chassis. Apple recommends trained technicians for service, so this should not be treated as an easy DIY repair.

Apple advises contacting Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for a damaged iPhone. You can also ask another repair provider about technician experience, parts provenance, the repair method, and what happens if inspection reveals additional damage. Apple’s information about Independent Repair Providers concerns access to genuine parts in the battery-service context; it does not guarantee that a particular provider offers XR rear-glass service in every location.

DIY repair
A model-specific XR back-glass kit is a specialist repair category, not an Apple-endorsed solution. The available teardown evidence describes the repair as complex and requiring chassis replacement. Unless you have the appropriate experience and tools, professional assessment is the safer route.

The available guidance does not establish whether a particular iPhone XR back crack will disable Qi wireless charging. Do not assume either that charging will fail or that it will work safely. If the phone was exposed to liquid, follow Apple’s drying directions and make sure it is dry before using a compatible wireless charger.
