Open-Silicon announced on May 7, 2007, that it had acquired key intellectual-property assets from Zenasis Technology. Days earlier, EE Times reported that Zenasis had sold its IP and was winding down operations. The deal moved Zenasis’s chip-optimization technology into Open-Silicon’s turnkey ASIC services; the company said it would support existing Zenasis customers, not sell the tools as stand-alone EDA software.

What happened to Zenasis?

The public timeline has two distinct dates. On May 4, 2007, EE Times reported that Zenasis had sold its IP assets and was wrapping up operations; the story also said the company’s main phone line had been disconnected. On May 7, Open-Silicon issued its public announcement that it had acquired key Zenasis IP assets. The reports do not establish the transaction’s exact legal closing date.

EE Times reported that Zenasis had 12 employees and that six joined Open-Silicon, citing former Zenasis engineering vice president Vamsi Boppana. The company had been founded in 2000, released ZenTime’s first product in May 2003, and raised $7 million in a third funding round in November 2004. Boppana said total investment later exceeded $20 million. These are figures attributed to the contemporaneous reporting, not disclosed deal terms.

What did Open-Silicon acquire?

The assets centered on the ZenTime family of IC-design optimization tools. Zenasis described itself as a supplier of transistor-level optimization technology. Its products addressed several parts of design work:

Tool Purpose reported by EE Times
ZenTime-GT Gate-level timing
ZenTime-XT Transistor-level timing
ZenTime-CT Automated cell generation
ZenTime-AT Area optimization
ZenTime-PT Leakage-power optimization using low-voltage-threshold cells in multiple-threshold designs

The technical distinction, as described by EDN’s contemporaneous account, was that the technology could analyze and optimize across standard-cell, physical-design, and transistor levels, including creating cells tailored to a particular design. The reports describe capabilities and intended use; they do not establish independently verified chip results.

How did Open-Silicon plan to use the technology?

Open-Silicon presented the acquisition as part of its “Science of ASICs” initiative. Its announcement said the technology could help optimize customer ASIC designs for performance, power, and area, and improve time to market. In EE Times, CEO Naveed Sherwani said the company planned to support existing Zenasis customers but would not sell the tools externally: Open-Silicon was not an EDA vendor and intended to keep its turnkey ASIC-service model.

That model was also the rationale offered by Boppana, who said Zenasis’s technology could find a better home where engineers worked closely with customers in a turnkey environment and were less dependent on customers’ existing tool flows.

What could the tools improve, and what is actually established?

EDN relayed a company example in which an embedded processor core might see its frequency increase “by up to 10 percent.” That figure is a vendor-stated possibility in a 2007 account, not an independently verified benchmark or a general expectation for designs using ZenTime. The reports do not document realized performance, power, or area gains after integration.

  • 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
  • 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
  • For the advanced Socket AM4 platform

The reporting also identified deployment complexity as a challenge. Sherwani described the technology as sophisticated and rooted in academic research, but said an average engineer could not use it immediately as a standard EDA tool. Former Zenasis CEO Dennis Harmon had previously written that the tools were too complex and difficult to deploy for fabless designers, and that he had advocated simpler, more self-contained software. These are attributed assessments, not findings from an independent usability study.

Why did Zenasis fold, and what is unknown about the deal?

The contemporary accounts do not provide a detailed financial explanation for Zenasis’s shutdown. Boppana said investors and management had decided to pursue another course for the company; the reports do not identify a single cause or establish that the technology itself had failed.

EDN reported that the purchase price was undisclosed. The available 2007 reports also do not establish detailed contractual terms, later product integration outcomes, or the ZenTime IP’s present ownership, availability, or support status. Open-Silicon’s stated plan to support existing customers should therefore be read as an announcement-era intention, not evidence of current support.
