Short answer: Microsoft ended Windows 8 support on January 12, 2016. Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. A Windows 8.1 computer will still boot and run, but it no longer receives Microsoft security updates, software updates, bug fixes, or technical support. Microsoft offers no Extended Security Update program for it, so continued use carries increasing security and compatibility risk.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 reached different end-of-support dates

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are separate products in Microsoft’s support lifecycle. Windows 8 users were expected to move to Windows 8.1 before Windows 8 support ended. That upgrade deadline did not extend the life of the original Windows 8 installation.

Product or support stage Date What it means
Windows 8 support ended January 12, 2016 Microsoft stopped supporting the original Windows 8 release. Customers had to move to Windows 8.1 by this date to remain on a supported path.
Windows 8.1 mainstream support ended January 9, 2018 Routine feature development and mainstream assistance ended.
Windows 8.1 extended support ended January 10, 2023 Security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, and online technical content updates ended.
Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025 Windows 10 is not a currently supported long-term destination for a new migration.

Microsoft’s lifecycle table has displayed January 11, 2023 for one Windows 8.1 entry, but Microsoft’s end-of-support notice and user guidance identify January 10, 2023 as the practical cutoff. That is the date to use when planning a move away from Windows 8.1.

What end of support changes on the computer

End of support is not a remote shutdown. Microsoft does not turn off an existing Windows 8.1 installation when its lifecycle ends. The computer can continue to start programs, open locally stored files, connect to networks, and perform ordinary tasks.

The change is the removal of Microsoft’s maintenance and assistance. After the cutoff, the operating system no longer receives:

  • Security patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities.
  • Non-security operating-system updates and feature changes.
  • Bug fixes supplied through Microsoft’s normal support channels.
  • Technical support for Windows 8.1 itself.
  • Updates to Microsoft’s online technical content for that release.

Those omissions matter even when the machine appears to work normally. A vulnerability found after the final supported update can remain open indefinitely. New application versions can also stop installing, refuse to update, or require a newer Windows version.

Can you still use a Windows 8.1 computer safely?

You can still use it, but you cannot treat it as a normally secure, supported Windows computer. Microsoft warns that a PC without continuing software and security updates faces greater exposure to viruses and malware. The risk is not a published percentage for an individual user; it depends on the machine’s software, network exposure, account privileges, the files it handles, and the attacks being attempted.

An antivirus product, firewall, careful browsing, or an ad blocker may reduce some forms of exposure, but none restores Microsoft’s missing operating-system patches. A security product may itself stop supporting Windows 8.1, so check its stated requirements and update policy rather than assuming that an installed copy remains protective.

The same distinction applies to compliance. Microsoft cautions that continued Windows 8.1 use can increase organizational security risk or create compliance problems. A business, school, clinic, or public-facing workstation should follow its organization’s security policy instead of making an individual exception because the computer still starts.

Why antivirus alone is not a complete answer

Security software generally works at the application or monitoring layer. Windows supplies the kernel, drivers, networking components, cryptography, system libraries, and update mechanisms beneath it. When Microsoft no longer fixes a flaw in those components, an antivirus scan cannot guarantee that the flaw is closed.

Unsupported systems also accumulate compatibility problems. A browser, document viewer, password manager, printer utility, or hardware driver can require a newer operating system. If the vendor ends support, you may be left with an old version that has its own unpatched defects.

Check what you have before deciding

Do not assume that every old machine is running the original Windows 8 release. Confirm the edition and version in the system information screen, or press Win+R, enter winver, and read the result. Record whether the machine is running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, and which applications and peripherals you cannot replace easily.

Make an inventory before changing anything:

  • Documents, photographs, project files, browser bookmarks, and locally stored email.
  • Applications that require reinstallation or a license transfer.
  • Printers, scanners, cameras, specialist USB devices, and other peripherals.
  • Credentials, recovery codes, encryption keys, and installation media.
  • Any business, accessibility, accounting, medical, or production software with a specific Windows requirement.

This list determines whether a supported upgrade is practical or whether replacing the computer is the safer route.

Your main choices now

Keep the computer temporarily

Keeping Windows 8.1 can make sense only as a short transition while you arrange a supported replacement or recover data from the old machine. Treat it as an unsupported endpoint, not as a safe permanent workstation. Avoid using it for activities that would expose valuable credentials or sensitive information, and disconnect it from networks when its task does not require a connection.

If it must remain connected, use a separate standard user account where possible, keep reliable offline backups, remove software you no longer need, and avoid installing unknown programs or opening unexpected attachments. These steps reduce exposure; they do not create a supported security baseline.

Move the existing computer to a supported Windows release

First check the device against Microsoft’s current Windows system requirements. Microsoft says PCs from the Windows 8.1 era are unlikely to meet Windows 11 requirements, but only an individual compatibility check can establish whether a particular machine qualifies.

If the hardware qualifies, plan the move as a migration rather than assuming that every program and setting will carry over automatically. Microsoft’s guidance warns that the installation path it describes can overwrite the existing storage drive. Copy important files to a separate, verified backup before starting, and make sure you can reinstall each essential application.

  1. Confirm that the device meets the supported release’s hardware and firmware requirements.
  2. Back up personal files to storage that is separate from the computer, then open several files from the backup to verify it.
  3. Collect application installers, license information, account recovery details, and peripheral drivers.
  4. Record settings you need to reproduce, such as browser bookmarks, email accounts, printer queues, and accessibility preferences.
  5. Run the supported Windows installation only after checking which installation option may remove the existing contents of the drive.
  6. Install current updates, security software, applications, and device drivers after the new system starts.
  7. Restore files and test every essential program and peripheral before retiring the old installation.

Replace an incompatible computer

If the current device cannot run a supported Windows release, Microsoft recommends replacing it with a device that supports Windows 11. A Windows 11 laptop or desktop is the relevant product category, but the right choice depends on compatibility, budget, workload, ports, accessibility needs, and the applications you use. Do not buy solely because a machine is inexpensive; confirm that it meets the current Windows requirements and supports your required peripherals.

Replacement also changes the migration work. You will need to transfer files, reinstall applications, sign in again, and possibly replace hardware that has no current driver. Keep the old computer intact until you have tested the new one and confirmed that your backups and accounts work.

Why Windows 10 is not the obvious fallback

Older Microsoft guidance for Windows 8.1 presented Windows 10 as a possible intermediate step. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, however, so installing it now does not provide a currently supported long-term endpoint. A machine that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements should be evaluated for replacement or for another operating system that has a clearly stated, current support lifecycle.

Application and peripheral compatibility has already changed

Microsoft states that Edge version 109 was the last Edge version supporting Windows 8.1. That means the browser may continue to launch, but newer browser features and security maintenance are not available for that operating-system combination.

Microsoft 365 applications are no longer supported on Windows 8.1. Other productivity software, security tools, cloud-storage clients, printers, scanners, and specialist devices have their own policies. Before keeping the computer or migrating it, check the current requirements published by every vendor for software and hardware you consider essential. A program that still installs today may lose updates later, so record the supported operating systems as part of your decision.

Compare keeping Windows 8.1 with migrating

Decision factor Keep the existing installation temporarily Migrate or replace
Security maintenance No Microsoft operating-system security updates; exposure increases over time. A supported release receives maintenance under its published lifecycle.
Technical support Microsoft support for Windows 8.1 is unavailable. Support is available according to the new product’s lifecycle and edition.
Applications and peripherals Existing software may work, but new versions and drivers can drop compatibility. Compatibility must be checked and applications reinstalled, but newer versions are more likely to be available.
Cost Little immediate hardware expense, but risk and maintenance limitations remain. Hardware, software, and migration costs vary by device and workload; no universal price applies.
Effort Minimal short-term change, followed by increasing troubleshooting constraints. Requires backup, transfer, reinstallations, testing, and possibly new hardware.

If you must keep it for a short transition

Set a firm replacement or migration date rather than allowing the temporary arrangement to become permanent. Keep irreplaceable data in a separate backup, limit network access to the tasks that require it, and do not use the machine as the only place where passwords, financial records, or business data exist.

Check every installed security and productivity product for Windows 8.1 support. If a critical application has no supported replacement, ask its vendor or your organization’s administrator for a documented migration plan. Do not rely on the continued presence of an old installer as evidence that the application remains secure.

Will my Windows 8.1 computer stop working?

Microsoft Support uses that exact question in its Windows 8.1 FAQ. The answer is no: the software continues to function, but updates and technical support have ended. That distinction explains why an old computer can appear normal while becoming a poor choice for internet-connected work.

The practical decision

Use the current computer only as a controlled, temporary bridge if you need time to back up files or arrange a migration. For regular internet use, sensitive accounts, business work, or devices subject to security requirements, move to a supported Windows release or replace hardware that cannot meet current requirements. There is no Windows 8.1 ESU program to extend Microsoft’s security coverage, and Windows 10 is no longer a supported destination.
