Sand 9 stopped operating as an independent startup in 2015 because Analog Devices acquired it. The Boston University spinout developed piezoelectric MEMS resonators for timing circuits intended as an alternative to quartz devices. Contemporary reporting put the acquisition in June 2015; Sand 9 did not simply disappear without a buyer.
Did Sand 9 shut down?
Sand 9 was no longer operating independently by mid-2015. An EE Times report published August 27, 2015 said the startup appeared to have closed: its website was inactive, its previously listed phone number did not work, and employment records for several executives, including its last known CEO, showed their Sand 9 roles ending in May 2015. At the time, the report noted a sale as a possible explanation, since there was no public closure announcement.
A follow-up EE Times report published September 1, 2015 said Analog Devices had acquired Sand 9 in June. It cited technology consultant Mark Sherwood and additional sources. The practical answer is that Sand 9 ceased to be an independent company through an acquisition.
What did Sand 9 make?
Founded in 2007 by Boston University professor Raj Mohanty and Matt Crowley, Sand 9 was a university spinout focused on piezoelectric microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Its resonators were designed for timing circuits—components that provide clock signals in electronic devices—with mobile phones among the intended applications. The technology was meant to compete with quartz crystal timing devices.

Sand 9 said in 2013 that it was gaining traction in mobile phones and had customers lined up for its first piezoelectric timing chips. That was the company’s own claim, reported at the time by EE Times; it does not establish that the chips reached broad commercial production.
How well funded was Sand 9?
EE Times reported in 2015 that Sand 9 had raised about $66 million in venture capital. Its reported backers included Intel Capital, Flybridge Capital Partners, General Catalyst Partners, Commonwealth Capital Partners, Khosla Ventures, Vulcan Capital, and Ericsson. Sand 9 also claimed to have filed more than 80 patents covering MEMS technology, circuits, systems, and process innovations, according to the same trade reporting.

Those figures show substantial backing and a broad intellectual-property effort, but they do not by themselves establish that the technology was ready for high-volume manufacturing or had secured durable sales.

Why did Sand 9 fail despite its funding?
A contemporaneous acquisition account attributed the company’s difficulties to technical issues, shifting markets, and investors losing patience. Sherwood described Sand 9 as having spent years developing its MEMS technology while the executive team had departed by the time of the sale. This is a reported explanation from a consultant, not a formal Analog Devices statement or an audited postmortem.

- 3-Axis MEMS Accelerometer Module: This LIS2DH12TR accelerometer module is designed for accurate 3-axis linear acceleration measurement, making it ideal for motion sensing, orientation detection, shake control, pedometer projects, impact detection, gaming input devices, and embedded motion-monitoring applications.
- Ultra-Low Power for Battery-Powered Designs: Featuring ultra-low power consumption as low as 2μA, the LIS2DH12 motion sensor is a great choice for portable electronics, wearable devices, wireless sensors, IoT nodes, and other low-power systems that require continuous motion detection with minimal energy use.
- I2C and SPI Digital Interfaces: The module supports both I²C and SPI digital output interfaces, offering flexible connection options for microcontrollers and development boards. It is suitable for Arduino, STM32, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and other embedded development platforms that require compact motion sensing.
- Selectable Measuring Range and Fast Data Output: The LIS2DH12 supports selectable full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, and ±16g, allowing users to match sensitivity to different applications. With an output data rate from 1Hz to 5.3kHz, it can handle both low-speed orientation changes and faster dynamic motion events.
- Programmable Interrupts and Orientation Detection: Built-in programmable interrupt generators support motion detection, free-fall detection, wake-up events, and 6D/4D orientation detection. With a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and a compact sensor design, this module is well suited for robotics, smart devices, data logging, and industrial or DIY motion-sensing projects.
The available account therefore supports a cautious conclusion: funding and patent claims were not enough to overcome the technical and market challenges Sand 9 reportedly faced. The sources do not establish one definitive cause or provide a full financial or engineering postmortem.

The reports establish that Analog Devices acquired Sand 9 in June 2015 and that the startup’s executive team was gone roughly three months later, according to Sherwood. They do not establish the final disposition of every Sand 9 patent or product, or whether particular designs continued inside Analog Devices. It is safer to describe the event as an acquisition that ended Sand 9’s independent operation than to claim that all of its technology was discontinued.
