OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser is discontinued: OpenAI scheduled it to stop working on August 9, 2026. At launch, Atlas promised ChatGPT help built into browsing, but early coverage questioned how useful that experience was and raised broader concerns about AI agents handling untrusted webpages. If you used Atlas, check your bookmarks and other browser data; OpenAI warns they may not transfer automatically.

What ChatGPT Atlas was

OpenAI described Atlas as “a new web browser with ChatGPT built in.” It launched on October 21, 2025, initially for macOS. At launch, OpenAI listed availability for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users globally, with a beta for Business users. Those details describe the launch, not a browser that remains available today. OpenAI’s Atlas release notes

The idea was to put ChatGPT into the browsing context rather than require users to move between a browser and a separate chatbot. The Ask ChatGPT sidebar could respond alongside a page, while agent mode was intended to let the AI perform browser-based tasks. The appeal was convenience; the key question was whether that convenience made ordinary browsing meaningfully better.

Why some launch coverage called the experience a mess

The usefulness question

In an October 25, 2025 hands-on review, WIRED called the sidebar “moderately helpful at best.” That is one reviewer’s dated assessment, not proof that every user found Atlas unhelpful. It does, however, capture the product-value challenge: integrating an assistant into a browser is not enough if its help does not improve the tasks people actually do there.

The security tradeoff of browser agents

Atlas’s agent features also raised a broader issue for AI browsers: webpages are untrusted input. TechCrunch’s launch-era coverage discussed prompt injection as a category-level challenge for agentic browsers. A malicious page can contain instructions intended to manipulate an AI agent that reads or acts on it. That risk is a reason to be cautious about granting agents access to webpages or actions—not evidence that Atlas suffered a specific breach, nor a measured failure rate. What happened to Atlas

OpenAI announced that it was discontinuing Atlas and moving browser-based agentic capabilities into ChatGPT and Codex. Atlas was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026, so it is not a browser readers can now install and use. OpenAI’s Atlas release notes and discontinuation guidance explain the shutdown and transition.

What former Atlas users should save

Do not assume that your browser data will follow you to another product. OpenAI warns that bookmarks, open tabs, and browsing history might not transfer automatically. Its guidance describes exporting bookmarks as an HTML file that can be imported into Chrome. Save or export anything you need before relying on a new browser workflow.

  • Bookmarks: Export them as HTML if you want to import them into Chrome.
  • Open tabs: Save important pages or record their addresses; OpenAI does not promise automatic transfer.
  • Browsing history: Preserve any information you need rather than assuming it will migrate.
  • Cookies and sessions: Treat these as sensitive. OpenAI says cookie export options are available where supported; they are not a general promise of transfer.

Follow the steps and availability details in OpenAI’s transition guidance, since export support can depend on what is supported for your setup.

What to use instead depends on the task

OpenAI points former Atlas users to two different kinds of workflow. These are alternatives by task, not a performance ranking; the available evidence does not establish a head-to-head comparison.

Was Atlas worth switching to?

Atlas’s appeal was having ChatGPT in the browser, with a sidebar for contextual help and an agent mode for browser tasks. Its launch-era reception was less settled: one WIRED review questioned the sidebar’s usefulness, and coverage of AI browser agents highlighted prompt-injection risks. Those are meaningful reasons to scrutinize the tradeoffs, but they do not establish a universal user experience or a quantified security outcome.
