A driverless Waymo vehicle struck and killed KitKat, a nine-year-old tabby known around Randa’s Market in San Francisco’s Mission District, late on October 27, 2025. The company’s account, reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, says the vehicle was pulling away after picking up passengers when KitKat went underneath it. A 311 complaint filed the next day gave a different account. The available reporting does not settle how the collision happened or whether it could have been avoided.
Who was KitKat?
KitKat was a nine-year-old tabby and a familiar presence at Randa’s Market, beside the Roxie Theater on 16th Street. Neighbors affectionately called him the “Mayor of 16th Street,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
What happened on October 27?
The collision occurred late Monday, October 27, 2025. The Chronicle reported that, in Waymo’s account, the vehicle had stopped to pick up passengers and was pulling away when KitKat went under it. His owners took him to an animal hospital, where he died later that night. The newspaper’s November 2 report is the source for this account.

A 311 complaint filed the following day described the event differently. As quoted by the Chronicle, the complaint said KitKat was sitting on the sidewalk near a transit lane and that the Waymo “did not even try to stop and hit the cat at a fast speed.” That is an allegation in a complaint, not a technical-investigation finding. The reporting provides no sensor data or independent reconstruction to resolve the discrepancy.

Consequently, the available accounts do not establish what the vehicle detected, the precise mechanics of the collision, or whether it was avoidable. The complaint should not be treated as proof of those points, and the company’s description does not independently resolve them.
What did Waymo say?
Waymo confirmed the collision on October 30, three days after it happened. In a statement quoted in Aidin Vaziri’s November 2 Chronicle article, the company said: “The trust and the safety of the communities we serve is our highest priority. We send our deepest sympathies to the cat’s owner and the community who knew and loved him, and we will be making a donation to a local animal rights organization in his honor.”

How did the neighborhood respond?
The Chronicle described a makeshift memorial where neighbors left flowers, candles, photographs, candy bars, and handwritten notes. Those reported tributes reflect the grief of people who knew KitKat; they should not be taken as representing every San Franciscan’s view of the incident.

Did the collision change local policy?
It became part of a wider debate over who should have authority over autonomous-vehicle operations, but the sources describe policy proposals and context—not a law enacted because of KitKat’s death.
Jackie Fielder’s proposed resolution
In a November 3 follow-up, the Chronicle reported that San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder planned to introduce a resolution urging state leaders to let counties make decisions about autonomous-vehicle operations. The report describes a proposal, not an adopted measure granting counties that authority.

Later regional and state context
A December 16, 2025 report from the San Francisco County Transportation Authority’s executive director referenced the Mission District cat death alongside a separate reported Waymo dog collision. It also noted regulatory approval for Waymo to expand driverless operations across parts of the Bay Area. That broader context does not establish what happened in KitKat’s collision.
