In-Stat was a business-to-business technology research firm acquired by The NPD Group in 2011. NPD initially kept its brand and paired its work with DisplaySearch, but closed the In-Stat operation in Scottsdale in 2012. The closure report said 20 employees were laid off.

What was In-Stat?

In-Stat provided market intelligence to business customers, not consumer products. Its coverage included mobile phones, connected devices, digital entertainment and the broader mobile Internet ecosystem. Its services included research reports, subscriptions, consulting and advisory work. Research Live’s acquisition report and Marketing Dive’s coverage describe the firm and its scope.

Acquisition coverage characterized In-Stat as having more than three decades of technology-sector experience at the time of the 2011 deal; that is a historical description, not a claim about a company operating today.

Who bought In-Stat, and what happened after the acquisition?

The NPD Group finalized its acquisition of In-Stat on April 1, 2011, according to Research Live. In-Stat president Mark Kirstein remained in that role, and the business was to work alongside NPD’s DisplaySearch analyst business.

NPD said the businesses would initially continue to operate separately, while the analysts broadened NPD’s coverage of mobile Internet and digital entertainment, as Marketing Dive reported. In-Stat therefore retained its name during an initial integration period; the acquisition did not mean the brand immediately disappeared.

When did In-Stat close?

The Phoenix Business Journal reported on April 10, 2012, that NPD had closed In-Stat’s Scottsdale operation and laid off 20 employees. The closure report establishes the Scottsdale shutdown; it does not, by itself, document every subsequent use of In-Stat research or the brand.

Is In-Stat still in business?

The available reporting establishes that NPD closed the In-Stat operation in Scottsdale in 2012. The sources reviewed do not establish a current In-Stat-branded operating company or an official current catalog of In-Stat products. That supports describing the firm as closed, rather than treating it as a current research provider.

Can you still find old In-Stat research?

Current availability of archived In-Stat reports is not established by the sources above. If you encounter a document attributed to In-Stat, evaluate it as a historical publication rather than assuming it is current or officially distributed by an active In-Stat business. Check:

  • Publication date: market findings and forecasts reflect the period in which the report was prepared.
  • Original publisher: distinguish an original In-Stat report from a later article or report that merely cites In-Stat.
  • Geographic coverage and methodology: confirm which markets, definitions and research methods the document covers before comparing its figures with newer work.
