Arcades did not disappear in a single collapse. Coin-operated games became a popular way to play in public, then traditional arcades faced a crowded market, better home consoles and social concerns. Arcade games found new homes in family entertainment centers, museums, vintage arcades and barcades. The barcade is one visible part of that survival—not proof of a measured nationwide revival.
What happened to arcades?
Arcades shifted from being a common place to discover and play video games to one of several ways to experience them. Their decline had multiple contributing pressures, and arcade play continued in venues with different audiences and purposes. The available historical sources do not establish one universal closing date or a national barcade growth rate.
How Pong helped make arcade games popular
Atari founder Nolan Bushnell conceived a video version of ping-pong in 1972 and assigned engineer Allan Alcorn to develop it, according to the Strong National Museum of Play. The Pong prototype was installed at Andy Capp’s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California, where it drew enough play to fill its coin box.

The Strong describes Pong as a game that “launched the video game industry”; that is the museum’s characterization of its impact, not a claim that no earlier electronic games existed.

Arcade and home gaming were connected from early on. Atari’s home Pong was distributed through Sears in 1975, according to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Magnavox brought a patent claim connected to the Odyssey’s earlier work, and Atari settled the dispute.
Why arcades became a familiar place to play
During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, arcades and arcade machines in places such as shopping centers and pubs were a main way people played video games, the National Videogame Museum explains. For many Americans, local arcades also offered an important introduction to games before home consoles were commonplace in most homes, according to a 2022 Census Bureau article.
Hits such as Pong (1972) and Space Invaders (1978) helped draw attention to arcade play. The National Videogame Museum highlights Space Invaders’ gameplay, graphics and accelerating soundtrack as influential features. That history is not a claim that arcades were the only way to play: home games existed too, and Atari’s home Pong was already on the market in 1975.

Why traditional arcades declined
The Strong identifies several pressures behind the decline of video arcades by the end of the twentieth century: an oversaturated arcade-game market, improving home consoles, and renewed anxieties about arcades and juvenile delinquency. The source does not rank those factors. The history is therefore more complex than saying the 1983 home-console crash alone caused arcades to close.
The evidence does not point to one universal date when arcades ended. Instead, it describes a decline in the traditional arcade’s prominence amid several market and social changes.
Where arcade games went next
Arcade play continued in venues with different audiences and aims, from commercial family entertainment to preservation and adult social outings, as the Strong describes in its overview of arcade forms.

What the available numbers do—and don’t—tell us
The Census Bureau’s November 2022 article reported 3,350 U.S. amusement arcade establishments and 66,707 employees in 2020, based on County Business Patterns data. The employment figure covers the pay period that included March 12, 2020. The article also reported nearly $750 million in annual payroll for those establishments.
These are historical figures for U.S. amusement arcade establishments, not current counts and not a barcade-specific measure. They show that establishments classified as amusement arcades remained part of the economy in 2020, but they cannot establish the scale or growth rate of barcades.
