Anaren’s IoT Group was not acquired by an outside buyer as a standalone business: key assets and agreements were divested to the group’s management team, which formed Atmosphere IoT Corp. The transaction closed on January 2, 2018, and Anaren and Atmosphere IoT announced it on January 24. The terms were not disclosed. The divestiture was part of Anaren’s previously announced sale to TTM Technologies for $775 million.

How the divestiture worked

Atmosphere IoT was formed by the management team of Anaren’s IoT Group. The January 2018 announcement described the transfer as a divestiture of key assets and agreements to that team; it did not disclose the transaction’s financial terms or describe it as a purchase of all of Anaren.

The transaction took place alongside Anaren’s sale to TTM Technologies. Anaren’s announced purchase price for that broader sale was $775 million. That figure was not the disclosed price for the IoT Group divestiture.

Who led Atmosphere IoT?

Jeff Liebl, Anaren IoT Group’s former president, became president and CEO of Atmosphere IoT. Kieron Gillespie, formerly a senior engineer in the group, became its chief technology officer. Anaren CEO Larry Sala called the outcome “an excellent outcome for everyone, including our IoT-related customers.”

What Atmosphere IoT offered

Atmosphere IoT described its offering as a cloud software platform for creating, deploying, and managing complete device-to-cloud solutions. Its intended audience was global developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) building wireless-enabled connected products. In the announcement, the company said its platform was used by thousands of developers and OEMs; that is a historical company claim, not a current user count.

IoT Now reported that the independent company intended to expand a web-based integrated development environment (IDE) supporting sensors, microcontrollers, mobile-app platforms, and cloud platforms. This describes the company’s stated direction at the time, not a verified current product roadmap.

  • All-Environment Ready: Run Wi-Fi smart switches (Home Assistant) and BLE tracking on one board. Industrial-grade stability (-40°C~85°C) for outdoor/automated systems.
  • Advantages: The ESP32 development board offers high performance, low power consumption, and rich wireless connectivity, making it suitable for developers of all levels, especially beginners.

What the platform supported before the spin-off

Anaren’s 2017 materials provide a snapshot of the platform’s capabilities before the divestiture:

  • Atmosphere 2.1: An August 2017 release described support for the BeagleBone Black Embedded Linux Development Kit and cloud-only projects that generated libraries for C#/.NET, C/C++, and Python.
  • ST components: An October 2017 release said Anaren’s IoT Group had joined STMicroelectronics’ ST Partner Program and that Atmosphere supported ST microcontrollers and sensors.

Anaren reported more than 3,500 unique registered users in the 2017 Atmosphere 2.1 release. This differs from Atmosphere IoT’s 2018 statement that it was used by thousands of developers and OEMs; neither figure establishes present-day usage.

Why the IoT business became independent

The announcements place the divestiture within Anaren’s broader sale to TTM Technologies and describe the IoT assets and agreements moving to the management team that had formed Atmosphere IoT. They do not give a specific strategic rationale for separating the IoT business or disclose the transfer terms, so a more detailed explanation of the parties’ motives is not established by those statements.

Liebl said the independent company could focus on serving developers and OEMs building wireless-enabled, cloud-connected products. That explains Atmosphere IoT’s stated focus after formation, but should not be treated as a disclosed explanation for every aspect of the transaction.

What is known about Atmosphere IoT today?

The available company announcement and trade coverage document the 2017–2018 transition and product context. They do not establish Atmosphere IoT’s ownership, operating status, product availability, or current platform capabilities in 2026. The historical hardware support and adoption figures above should therefore not be read as confirmation that those products or services are still available.
