AllHere Education built Ed, an AI chatbot project for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The project ended after the company ran into financial distress, and federal prosecutors later charged AllHere founder Joanna Smith-Griffin with securities fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors allege she misled investors and used some investor funds for a home down payment and wedding expenses. Those claims are allegations, not a conviction; the Justice Department announcement does not substantiate the headline description of a “mansion.”
What was Ed, and what was it supposed to do?
Ed was an AI-enhanced student advisor developed by AllHere Education for LAUSD. It was promoted as a way for students and families to get academic guidance and information about navigating the district. The project was a public-school technology initiative, not a consumer chatbot sold directly to families.
The Los Angeles Times reported that LAUSD’s original contract with AllHere was valued at up to $6 million over five years. The district had spent about $3 million, according to that reporting. The contract ceiling and the amount reportedly spent are different figures: the ceiling describes the maximum stated contract value, not money necessarily paid.
Why did the chatbot project end?
Ed was halted after AllHere furloughed most of its staff and reported financial distress, according to the Los Angeles Times. The project’s end followed the vendor’s difficulties; the reported LAUSD spending should not be confused with the investor funds prosecutors say were used for personal expenses.

What are the federal charges against Joanna Smith-Griffin?
On November 19, 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced charges against Smith-Griffin: securities fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors allege that she deceived investors in AllHere Education. A criminal charge is an accusation, not proof of guilt, and the allegations should not be described as established facts unless resolved in court.
The Justice Department says that in spring 2021 Smith-Griffin told prospective investors AllHere had about $3.7 million in 2020 revenue, about $2.5 million in cash, and major school-district customers that included New York City and Atlanta Public Schools. Prosecutors allege that financial and customer claims were false or misleading. These were investor-facing company figures, not LAUSD contract payments.

What do prosecutors allege about the house and wedding?
According to the Justice Department, prosecutors allege that some investor funds went toward a down payment on Smith-Griffin’s home in North Carolina and wedding expenses. The announcement describes a home down payment; it does not establish that the home was a mansion. The alleged personal expenditures are also distinct from the reported amount LAUSD spent under its contract with AllHere.
