MIT professor John Kassakian helped lead a late-1990s industry effort to move cars beyond their traditional 12–14-volt electrical systems. The exact 42-volt architecture never became a universal standard; today’s mild hybrids more commonly use a supplemental 48-volt system alongside a 12-volt domain.

Why did the auto industry consider a higher voltage?

Cars were adding electrical functions faster than the traditional system could support them economically and efficiently. Although commonly called a 12-volt system, a running car’s electrical system operates at roughly 14 volts. EDN’s 1999 account of the MIT-led effort identified electronic valves and clutches, electric steering and braking, heated catalysts, and power electronics among the functions that could increase demand.

Higher voltage can deliver more electrical power without requiring the same increase in current. That offered a way to support new loads while managing wiring weight and losses. The potential benefit had to be weighed against the expense and disruption of changing a mature vehicle electrical infrastructure.

What was MIT professor John Kassakian’s role?

Kassakian, an MIT professor of electronic engineering, chaired the Consortium on Advanced Automotive Electrical/Electronic Components and Systems. Established in 1995, the cross-industry group worked toward agreement on a new automotive voltage and examined engineering and economic trade-offs, including weight, cost and efficiency.

EDN reported in 1999 that more than 100 engineers had participated. At the last meeting covered in that report, 115 representatives from 26 companies attended. Membership was reported at $50,000 per year at the time. Those figures describe the consortium in 1999, not current membership or industry-wide participation.

Kassakian saw economics as the deciding factor, saying the change would be driven by “the economics of the auto industry.” He also argued that new functions needing more power than a running 14-volt system could support would spur the transition.

Why didn’t 42 volts become the universal standard?

A higher-voltage design could make new electrical functions more practical, but carmakers would have had to rework components, manufacturing and service practices built around 12 volts. The cost of that change competed with the benefits, while reliability and warranty risks made automakers cautious. In the 1999 EDN account, Kassakian called economics the central question for 42 volts.

The consortium’s forecast that broad production adoption might arrive in 2003–2005 was a prediction, not an outcome. The industry did not replace its existing 12-volt infrastructure with a universal 42-volt standard. Nor does the evidence establish a current market share for cars using the original 42-volt proposal.

Did Toyota build a 42-volt mild hybrid?

Toyota and Denso documented a 42-volt mild-hybrid power-control system in a 2002 SAE paper. It used a belt-driven motor-generator, an inverter and a DC/DC converter to supply 14-volt loads. This shows that a 42-volt system was engineered and described technically; the paper alone does not establish that Toyota sold a production car using it.

How does today’s 48-volt approach differ?

Modern mild hybrids generally add a 48-volt electrical network rather than replacing the 12-volt domain outright. A DC/DC converter can connect the higher-voltage system to 12-volt loads. The 48-volt network can support higher-power functions and hybrid features such as stop-start operation and regenerative braking. SAE’s 2015 reference described supplemental 48-volt systems as a next step for mild hybrids; NHTSA’s 2024–2025 regulatory analysis and current vehicle materials also describe 48-volt architectures.

Comparison Original 42-volt effort Supplemental 48-volt mild hybrid
Relationship to 12–14 V Toyota and Denso’s 2002 SAE system used a DC/DC converter to supply 14-volt loads. Retains a 12-volt domain alongside the 48-volt system, as described by SAE and NHTSA.
Motor-generator and battery role The 2002 Toyota and Denso paper describes a belt-driven motor-generator and inverter; battery details are not stated in the cited account. A mild-hybrid network supports functions including idle stop and regenerative braking. Components vary by vehicle.
Cost and integration Automakers faced the expense of changing mature 12-volt infrastructure and concerns about reliability and warranty risk, according to EDN’s 1999 account. System-specific integration costs are not stated in the cited SAE, NHTSA or manufacturer materials.
Efficiency and emissions A quantified emissions result for the original 42-volt proposal is not stated in the cited material. A 2014 SAE abstract gave an up-to-15% CO2-reduction target for a 48-volt mild-hybrid application; it is a target for that application, not a universal measured result.
Adoption evidence A 2002 technical paper documents Toyota’s system; it does not establish broad production adoption. SAE and NHTSA describe the architecture, and Audi describes a current 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

What can a 48-volt mild hybrid do in a current car?

Audi MHEV plus

Audi’s MHEV plus system uses three named components: a powertrain generator, a belt alternator starter and a 48-volt lithium-iron-phosphate battery. This is a manufacturer’s example of a present-day 48-volt mild-hybrid arrangement, not evidence that every 48-volt vehicle uses the same components or performs identically.

How common are mild hybrids?

The U.S. EPA reported that hybrids accounted for 15% of new-vehicle production in model year 2024. In the EPA’s classification, mild-hybrid systems operating at 48 volts or less fall within the hybrid category. That figure is for hybrids broadly under the EPA’s classification; it is not a market-share estimate for 48-volt systems alone.

So, did cars move from 12 volts to 48 volts?

Not as a wholesale replacement. The 42-volt campaign helped focus attention on the limits of the traditional system as electrical demand grew, and Toyota and Denso documented a 42-volt mild-hybrid design. The approach that appears in current examples is instead a supplemental 48-volt network paired with a 12-volt domain. The original 42-volt standard did not become universal.
