The University of Virginia confirmed that intruders accessed part of its human resources system after reportedly obtaining employee login credentials through phishing. The suspected access began in early November 2014 and last occurred in early February 2015. SecurityWeek reported in January 2016 that about 1,400 employees’ W-2 information and 40 employees’ direct-deposit banking information were accessed.
What happened in the University of Virginia HR breach?
On January 22, 2016, SecurityWeek reported that UVA had confirmed unauthorized access to a component of its human resources system. The university’s statement, quoted by SecurityWeek, said that “unauthorized individuals illegally accessed a component of our human resources system, exposing personally identifiable information of a subset of Academic Division employees.” The account describes access affecting a subset of Academic Division employees, not the entire university workforce.
SecurityWeek reported that the FBI notified UVA following a law-enforcement investigation and that suspects overseas had been taken into custody. The report did not identify the suspects, name a country, or give charges or a court outcome. SecurityWeek’s January 22, 2016 report is the accessible contemporaneous account; the linked UVA notice could not be independently reviewed.

It also does not specify precisely which fields each record contained. The report documents access, not subsequent publication or sale of the information, fraudulent tax filings, or financial losses.

How did attackers reportedly get into the HR system?
According to SecurityWeek, attackers sent phishing emails asking recipients to follow a link and enter their usernames and passwords. With valid credentials, they then accessed the HR system and employee records.
The report does not say whether multifactor authentication was enabled, identify a software vulnerability or HR platform, or establish that malware was involved. Those details should not be inferred from the described credential-theft route.

When did the suspected access occur?
The reported intrusion began in early November 2014, with the last suspected access in early February 2015. UVA’s confirmation was reported in January 2016, after the FBI notified the university. The event is therefore a retrospective account of an older incident, not evidence of a current breach.
What is known about the response and later misuse?
The available account establishes that UVA worked with the FBI and that investigators notified the university. It does not establish the exact notifications UVA sent to affected employees, any remedial services it provided, or whether any accessed information was later misused. The report also does not name a credit-monitoring provider or establish that UVA offered one.

Is UVA’s 2026 HR-themed phishing warning related?
No. On March 10, 2026, UVA Information Security warned about a separate phishing lure impersonating Human Resources. The reproduced email encouraged recipients to open a student report by installing or updating a viewer, after which Zoho Assist would appear. That warning concerns a malicious email lure; it is not evidence of a 2026 HR-system breach or proof that the lure is connected to the 2014–2015 intrusion. UVA Information Security published that later warning.
