Andaman and Nicobar police reported seizing more than 6,000 kg of methamphetamine from a boat they said had come from Myanmar, and detaining six Myanmar nationals in late November 2024. Police put the drugs’ retail-market value at 360 billion rupees, reported as $4.25 billion. A senior officer said the people on board had used a Starlink Mini during the journey—but the cited reporting does not establish that the device independently navigated the boat or that forensic evidence confirmed how it was used.
What happened in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?
Reuters reported on December 3, 2024, that police in India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands seized more than 6,000 kg (about 13,000 lb) of methamphetamine from a Myanmar boat in late November and detained six Myanmar nationals. These are figures reported by police, not independently verified measurements in the cited coverage. Reuters reporting republished by The Economic Times.
Police estimated the seized drugs’ retail-market value at 360 billion rupees, or $4.25 billion as reported. That is an attributed retail-market estimate, not a confirmed sale price or evidence that the drugs would have sold for that amount in a particular transaction.

Hargobinder S. Dhaliwal, the senior Andaman Islands police officer handling the case, told Reuters that the smugglers used a Starlink Mini and had used it from the start of the journey from Myanmar. He also described satellite-connected phones creating a Wi-Fi hotspot, saying: “They directly operated (phones) with satellite, creating a Wi-Fi hotspot.” Reuters reporting republished by NDTV.

Those statements describe the police account. The cited reports do not document an independent forensic examination of the device, establish who operated it, or show that Starlink alone supplied the boat’s navigation. Satellite internet connectivity can support communications and access to online services; the reporting does not prove that the Mini functioned as an independent navigation system in this case. Dhaliwal characterized the case as different because it was “bypassing all the legal channels.”
Was Starlink why police caught the boat?
The cited reporting does not say that Starlink led police to the boat or caused the seizure. It reports the seizure and an officer’s account of the device’s alleged use, but does not establish a causal link between satellite connectivity and the interception. It also does not establish that the device made the boat invisible to authorities.

What information did investigators plan to seek?
Dhaliwal said he planned to ask Starlink for information about who bought the device, when it was purchased, and its usage history. Reuters’ December 3, 2024, coverage said Starlink had not immediately responded to a request for comment. The reports describe a planned inquiry; they do not establish whether a request was made, what information Starlink may have provided, or what investigators ultimately concluded.
What is Starlink Mini, and what was its reported availability?
In this account, Starlink Mini is identified as a satellite internet device. The reporting describes satellite connectivity being used with phones to create a Wi-Fi hotspot; it does not provide technical evidence that the Mini independently navigated the boat. The December 2024 coverage said Starlink offered coverage in international waters and that service in Indian territorial waters was then contingent on government approval. That is historical regulatory context from the time of the report, not a statement of current service availability.

How does the seizure fit the regional meth trade?
Reuters reported that methamphetamine seizures in East and Southeast Asia reached a record 190 tons in 2023, citing the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The same Reuters coverage described India as a growing transit and destination market for methamphetamine from Myanmar. The regional figure provides context, but it does not independently verify the amount or value attributed to this particular seizure.
