Dak Prescott said the late-game disagreement with Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer was not a lack of trust. Schottenheimer acknowledged that he chose a word he regretted before a pivotal third-down play, and the two said they talked afterward about communicating better. The word itself was not disclosed.
Dallas lost 34-31 to Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 27, 2026. The communication issue became part of the postgame discussion because Schottenheimer said his wording put Prescott into a mindset he had not been playing with. Prescott described it as a term that should have been chosen differently—not a loss of trust or an instruction to throw to a particular spot.
What happened on the late third down?
With the game in its closing stages, Schottenheimer used a word before a third-down play that he later said he wished he had not used. He declined to identify it. Prescott made a quick throwaway, and Dallas settled for a field goal that tied the score.

Schottenheimer said he had overcoached the moment and accepted responsibility for his part in it. Prescott’s account was narrower: the term could have been different, but he did not interpret the exchange as his coach directing him to throw to a specific place.

Did the incident damage Prescott’s trust in his coach?
Prescott said, “I don’t think it was a lack of trust.” Schottenheimer likewise said, “This has got nothing to do with trust.” Those comments address the distinction at the heart of the exchange: Schottenheimer believed his word affected Prescott’s mindset, while Prescott did not describe the problem as a breakdown of trust.
According to Schuyler Dixon’s Associated Press report published by The Washington Post on Oct. 2, 2026, the two discussed the play after the game. Prescott described the debrief as “Honest conversations between a head coach and a quarterback.” Their public comments framed it as a communication mistake they intended to handle better together, not as evidence that their relationship had fractured. What happened after Dallas tied the game?
The communication before the third-down play was only one part of the closing sequence. After Dallas’s tying field goal, seven seconds remained. The Cowboys kicked the ball through the end zone rather than forcing a return, giving Baltimore the ball for one final possession.
Lamar Jackson then completed a 27-yard pass to move the Ravens into field-goal range. Baltimore used a timeout with one second left, and Tyler Loop made a 56-yard field goal as time expired to win 34-31.

Was the kickoff the only other decision Dallas questioned?
No. The kickoff choice and the defense’s call were separate issues from the communication before Prescott’s third-down play. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker said he had overthought his call and said, “So definitely would make a different call if that situation came up again.” The report does not establish that any one of these decisions alone caused the loss.
When the Associated Press report appeared on Oct. 2, Dallas was 1-2 and preparing to visit the Texans. That record is the team’s standing at the time of the report, not a season projection.
