Futurism reported that White House staff began clearing media from a press scrum as an unidentified reporter asked President Donald Trump about calling AI a “hoax.” The account places the exchange as the event was winding down; it does not establish that the question caused the scrum to end or that Trump or his staff cut it short to avoid answering.
What happened at the September 29 press scrum?
In a report published September 30, 2026, Futurism correspondent Joe Wilkins said Trump held a discussion with technology executives and then spoke with reporters. The gathering included Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, according to Futurism.
During the scrum, an unidentified reporter challenged Trump over his past description of AI safety concerns as a “hoax.” Wilkins’s article gives this incomplete fragment of the question: “Mr President you’ve also called AI a ‘hoax,’ why should…” The report does not identify the reporter or supply the rest of the question.

What is known about the room being cleared?
Futurism says the scrum was already winding down and that staff began corralling media out of the room as the question was raised. That is the reported sequence. The article does not provide a schedule, a full recording or transcript, or an official explanation establishing why the scrum ended. It therefore supports saying staff began clearing the room during the exchange, not that the question made them end the event.

How should the shorter quote be understood?
Futurism also reproduces a brief caption attributed to Acyn’s September 29 post: “You talked about common ground, you’ve called AI a hoax.” The wording appears in Wilkins’s report; the underlying post and video were not independently available for review. Treat it as a caption reproduced by the article, not as a complete, independently verified transcript of the exchange.

Wilkins describes the gathering as involving discussion of AI and characterizes executives including Amodei and Musk as calling for a slowdown over AI risks. That is the report’s summary, not a direct quotation from either executive in this story. It does not provide enough detail to compare their positions, outline specific policy proposals, or support numerical claims about public opinion or data-center popularity.
