A product labeled “hair-growth serum” is not necessarily proven to regrow hair. Topical minoxidil is the best-supported over-the-counter topical option in the sources reviewed, but it is intended for certain forms of pattern hair loss—not every cause of thinning. Cosmetic products may condition fragile strands or help reduce breakage; that is different from treating hair loss at the follicle.
What hair-growth serums actually work?
It depends on what “work” means. A conditioner or leave-in product can make hair easier to detangle and help limit damage. Topical minoxidil, by contrast, is a medication that the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) says can reduce hair loss and stimulate growth for some people with pattern hair loss. It does not work for every cause, and individual results vary.

Ingredient names on a bottle do not settle the question. In an April 1, 2025 AAD feature on female-pattern hair loss, the evidence discussed for trendy ingredients was described as limited or conflicting. The feature also says a caffeine/adenosine shampoo was not as effective as topical minoxidil, according to a dermatologist quoted in the article. That comparison does not establish how every formula performs, nor does it show that all products containing those ingredients are equivalent.
Can a serum regrow thinning hair?
Some treatments can help with some types of hair loss, but thinning has multiple possible causes and a serum label cannot identify or treat them all. AAD advises seeing a board-certified dermatologist to help determine the cause; treatment depends on the diagnosis. Do not assume that sudden, patchy, or otherwise unexplained loss is pattern hair loss or try to diagnose it from a product claim.

For fragile hair, gentle shampooing, conditioning, leave-in detangling, and drying with a microfiber towel can help limit damage. These are hair-care measures, not proof that a serum is reversing follicular hair loss.
How long does minoxidil take, and do you have to keep using it?
AAD guidance says many people may need six to twelve months to see results from minoxidil. That is a typical timeframe, not a guarantee; the response varies. Stopping treatment means losing its benefits over time, so maintaining results generally requires continued use.

Follow the directions and warnings on the specific product label, and ask a clinician whether it is appropriate for you. Do not assume that directions or evidence described for men apply to women. AAD’s April 2025 feature described topical minoxidil as the only FDA-approved treatment for female-pattern hair loss at the time that article was published; approval and labeling can vary by place and may change, so check current local labeling and professional guidance.

Minoxidil products can cause scalp irritation, and warnings differ by product; read the label rather than treating all formulations as interchangeable. Keep minoxidil away from cats and dogs: AAD warns that it can be toxic to both.

When should you see a dermatologist?
Consider a board-certified dermatologist if you do not know why your hair is thinning, or if the loss is sudden or patchy. A dermatologist can assess the type and cause and recommend treatment accordingly. As dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani, MD, FAAD, put it in an AAD article published July 21, 2022: “It is important for patients to know that they can get individualized, evidence-based recommendations from a board-certified dermatologist.”
