In a March 20, 2024, interview with EE Times, Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) co-founder and CEO Jodi Shelton identified geopolitics, economic insecurity and talent as major challenges for the semiconductor industry. She also discussed AI’s expanding opportunity beyond Nvidia and GSA’s effort to bring end customers, including chip-designing OEMs, into its community.
Who is Jodi Shelton?
Shelton is the co-founder and CEO of the Global Semiconductor Alliance. GSA’s leadership biography says she helped create the organization and serves as its industry spokesperson. The alliance’s members span the semiconductor supply chain and represent 45 countries, according to GSA’s biography.
Her background includes a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science and a Corporate Governance program certification from Columbia Business School. GSA’s leadership biography

In the interview, EE Times described Shelton’s central concerns as geopolitics, economic insecurity and talent. They are connected: semiconductor companies depend on international relationships and investment, while their ability to design and produce chips also relies on people with specialized skills.
Geopolitics and economic insecurity
Semiconductors are made through a globally connected supply chain. Shelton’s emphasis on geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty reflects the difficulty companies face when planning amid changes in the international environment. The interview names these challenges but does not quantify their effects or prescribe a specific policy response.
Talent and women’s leadership
Shelton also discussed a women leaders in semiconductors session at GSA’s first international semiconductor conference in London. That topic sits alongside the industry’s broader talent challenge: leadership representation and the availability of skilled workers both matter to an ecosystem that needs people across chip design, manufacturing and related roles.
EE Times’ interview by Nitin Dahad was published March 20, 2024.

How does Shelton describe AI’s effect on semiconductors?
Shelton characterized Nvidia as a major force in AI while noting that startups can pursue opportunities across wider AI markets. Her point is not that Nvidia’s position is unimportant, but that AI demand is not necessarily limited to one company or a single use case. Emerging companies may find room in different applications and parts of the broader AI market.
Rank #3
The interview discusses industry opportunity rather than comparing AI chips, products or company performance; it does not provide market-size figures or forecasts.
Why is GSA expanding beyond fabless chip companies?
GSA began as the Fabless Semiconductor Association. Shelton described a broader role for the alliance that includes end customers as well as semiconductor companies. One reason is that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) increasingly design their own chips and build closer relationships with the chip-design and manufacturing ecosystem.
That shift reflects how chip decisions can involve more than semiconductor vendors alone. OEMs and other end customers have a stake in the technologies and supply relationships behind the systems they make, so including them can widen the conversation across the value chain.
What does GSA offer its industry community?
GSA’s official materials describe research products and executive events as parts of its industry programming. Its contact page identifies Market Watch, Financial Tracker, Index of Leading Indicators and Quarterly Economic Review work. These offerings provide routes for industry participants to follow market and business topics beyond the questions raised in Shelton’s interview. GSA contact and research information
