There was no single starting point in the reader stories collected by What Hi-Fi?: for some, it was an album; for others, a memorable first system, a gifted component or the urge to build equipment themselves. The examples are personal recollections, not a representative poll or a comparison of the products mentioned.
In its 1 October 2026 feature, What Hi-Fi? asked readers which product, album or concert first drew them into hi-fi. The answers ranged from a few words about a record to detailed memories of equipment, music and the circumstances that brought them together.
For some, a song or album was the starting point
Ivan Harrison gave a concise answer: “Dark Side Of The Moon,” Pink Floyd’s album. Another reader, Jan Sejvl, remembered hearing Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga” on a system assembled in 1980s Czechoslovakia. In the feature, Sejvl described the first notes as “the very start of a never-ending search for something better.”
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Sometimes a piece of music, heard in a way that makes a lasting impression, is what prompts someone to pay closer attention to sound.

A first system can become part of the memory
Sejvl recalled that a German tourist brought a Toshiba receiver and a Dual CS 1246 turntable across the Iron Curtain. The loudspeakers were built at home with help from a friend. The story is notable for the way its parts came together: the music, the equipment and the unusual circumstances of access all formed one formative listening experience.
Other readers remembered first machines and stereos from childhood and adolescence. One account began with a GE three-inch reel-to-reel machine received at age 11, then continued with a 1970 Montgomery Ward’s Airline AM/FM cassette home stereo at age 14. Froze Rekmeyata summed up the importance of an early machine by saying, “That machine made me start to appreciate music.”

Gifts and hand-me-downs opened the door for others
Roony Muck described being given a 1970s-era Marantz stereo receiver by a friend’s mother and pairing it with his father’s hand-me-down Celestion Ditton 15 loudspeakers. He later passed the equipment on to another teenager. In that account, a system’s significance was not just what it played; it was also how it moved between people.

- BRING MUSIC AND movies TO LIFE: Upgrade from a TV speaker, soundbar or Bluetooth speaker to a proper stereo system. Q1 Meta delivers clearer vocals, greater detail, deeper bass and a much wider, more natural soundstage, making music more engaging and movies more immersive.
- HEAR CLEAR, NATURAL SOUND FROM ANYWHERE IN THE ROOM: KEF’s unique driver design combines the high and midrange frequencies in one carefully engineered unit, helping sound spread evenly throughout your room. Whether you’re sitting directly in front of the speakers or off to the side, voices remain clear and music stays detailed and balanced.
- ADVANCED ENGINEERING YOU CAN HEAR: Behind the Q1 Meta’s natural, detailed sound is KEF’s Metamaterial Absorption Technology. This reduces unwanted distortion and help the speaker reproduce music more cleanly, so you hear the detail and character of your favorite recordings rather than a colored or harsh version of them.
- COMPACT BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS WITH SURPRISINGLY BIG SOUND: The 5.25-inch bass/midrange driver produces punchy, controlled bass and detailed vocals from a compact enclosure measuring just 302 mm high. Ideal for bedrooms, studies, apartments and smaller living rooms, Q1 Meta gives you serious stereo sound without filling the room with large speakers.
- THE RIGHT START FOR YOUR FIRST HI-FI SYSTEM: Q1 Meta is a passive speaker, so you’ll need a separate stereo amplifier to power it. This gives you the freedom to choose the amplifier and other components that suit your needs, while the speakers can remain at the heart of your system as you upgrade. Add a KEF subwoofer or other Q Series speakers later for deeper bass or a full home-cinema setup.
What these stories do—and do not—tell us
The feature offers a set of individual memories, not a quantified study of how people get into hi-fi. Its examples cannot establish which route is most common, and the named products are not ranked or assessed for performance, value or current availability. They are details in readers’ stories, rather than recommendations or buying advice.
The more useful takeaway is that there is no single required first step. A record, a first pair of speakers, a hand-me-down stereo or a home-built component can all become the moment someone starts listening more closely.
