Google’s Web filter narrows Search to text-based links to websites. Use it when you want ordinary web pages for reading, research, and source comparison rather than Google’s image, video, news, map, shopping, book, or forum results. It changes the type of results shown; it does not certify that those results are accurate, neutral, safe, or high quality.
What is Google’s Web filter?
Google defines the Web filter as the result view that “contains text-based links to websites.” In practical terms, it is a way to request conventional web-page results instead of specialized formats or richer Search features. A result may include a page title, website address, a short description, and other standard Search details, but the destination is a website page rather than an image gallery, video player, map listing, product panel, or news-specific module.
The filter is part of Google Search, not a separate search engine or browser setting. It does not create a private or untracked search mode, and it does not apply a quality label to the pages it returns. Google’s automated systems still select and rank the listings. Those systems interpret the meaning of your query and consider relevance, usability, context, location, and other settings. Their output can be useful, but Google says its algorithms are imperfect.

How to open the Web filter
Search for your topic normally, then look at the filter row near the top of the results page. Select Web when it is displayed. On some queries, Google places it directly in the row; on others, it may be inside an additional filter menu. The available filters and their order can change by query, device, account, location, and Google’s interface experiments.

- Open Google Search on your phone or computer.
- Enter a query, such as a question, topic, organization, or technical term.
- Submit the search and wait for the results page.
- Choose Web in the filter row or in the menu that reveals additional result types.
- Open several results and evaluate their authors, dates, evidence, and relevance before relying on an answer.
If Web is not visible, that does not necessarily mean it has been removed. Google can change which filters are offered or emphasize a different filter for a particular query. Try the additional-filter menu, simplify the query, or return to the standard results page and inspect the available options.
When Web is the right choice
Web is most useful when the information you need lives in ordinary pages and you want to compare more than one source. It is a good default for research, background reading, documentation, definitions, policy pages, how-to guides, and pages published by organizations or specialists.
Research across multiple sources
For a research question, Web gives you a list of pages you can open, compare, and cite. This is preferable when the task involves checking how different authors explain a subject, finding primary documentation, or following links and references inside an article. Search with a specific phrase, add a date or place when it matters, and inspect more than the first result.
Reading a complete web page
Use Web when the answer depends on context that a compact Search feature may omit. A full page can include definitions, assumptions, methods, publication dates, revision notes, supporting documents, and contact information. The filter is especially helpful when you need to understand an entire guide rather than extract one fact.

Finding technical documentation
Software manuals, standards, troubleshooting pages, and developer documentation are generally website content. Web lets you look for those pages directly and compare official documentation with independent explanations. Include the product name, version, operating system, or error text in your query to reduce irrelevant results.
Finding a page when a specialized format is distracting
A query can produce videos, images, news blocks, shopping modules, maps, or other Search features even when you want written sources. Selecting Web removes much of that format-specific presentation and puts text links at the center of the page. It does not remove every possible enhancement or guarantee that every result will be a plain, minimal listing.
When another Google filter is better
The best filter is determined by the format of information you need. Google documents separate filters for Books, Forums, Images, Maps, News, Shopping, Short Videos, and Videos. Their roles differ from Web:

This table describes the intended task fit, not a permanent interface promise. Google can change filter names, availability, ordering, and the amount of specialized presentation shown for a query.

Web versus All: what changes?
All is the general Search view. It can combine ordinary website links with images, videos, news, maps, shopping results, local information, featured answers, and other modules when Google considers them useful. Web asks for website links as the primary result category.
Choose All when you want Google to assemble several formats or when you are not sure which format will answer the question. Choose Web when mixed modules make it harder to find written pages, when you want to compare source websites, or when your task is explicitly about documents and articles. Switching to Web does not mean that the results are automatically more authoritative; it only changes the result category.
Web versus SafeSearch
These features solve different problems. The Web filter controls what kind of result you receive: text-based website links rather than another specialized category. SafeSearch controls whether Google shows detected explicit material.

Choosing Web does not turn SafeSearch on or off. If explicit-result controls matter, check SafeSearch separately. In Filter mode, Google describes the setting as blocking all detected explicit results; detection is automated and may not be perfect. In Blur mode, text and links can still appear even when explicit images are blurred.

How Google selects Web results
Web is not a hand-curated directory. Google says web listings are selected and ranked by automated systems. The systems consider the meaning of the query, relevance, usability, context, and settings such as location. A page can therefore appear high for one person or wording and lower for another, even when the underlying topic is similar.
The filter also does not guarantee that a result is accurate, current, unbiased, original, or free of advertising. A text link can lead to a carefully sourced primary document, a personal opinion, an outdated page, or a copied article. The result format alone cannot tell you which one it is.
How to evaluate pages returned by Web
Use the filter to find candidates, then evaluate each page before accepting its claims.

- Check the date: Look for publication and update dates. A technically correct page can become obsolete after a policy, product, or software change.
- Read the evidence: Prefer pages that explain their method, cite primary documents, link to data, or distinguish facts from opinion.
- Compare independent sources: Important claims should not rest on one unverified page. Compare wording, dates, and supporting evidence.
- Check the page itself: Make sure the result actually addresses your question rather than matching only a keyword.
- Watch for copied or generic text: Similar wording across many sites can indicate republishing rather than independent confirmation.
- Account for location and context: Search results can vary with location and settings, so verify that a page applies to your country, edition, language, or situation.
What the 2024 quality figure does—and does not—mean
Google reported 45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in Search as of April 19, 2024. Google compared that result with the 40% reduction it had expected from the combined work announced in March 2024. This is a Search-quality update statistic. It is not a measurement that the Web filter itself caused a 45% improvement, nor does it mean every Web result is original or reliable.

Use the figure as context for Google’s quality efforts, not as a substitute for evaluating a page. The practical checks—publisher, date, evidence, and independent confirmation—still apply.
Practical Web-filter workflows
Comparing explanations of a technical problem
- Search the exact error message in quotation marks, adding the affected product and version.
- Select Web if the results page emphasizes videos, forums, or other formats and you need written instructions.
- Open the official documentation and at least one independent explanation.
- Confirm that the instructions match your version and operating system before changing settings.
Finding current reporting
- Use News when the central requirement is recent reporting about an event.
- Use Web afterward to locate background pages, official statements, laws, or technical documents.
- Check the publication date and distinguish a contemporaneous report from an older explainer.
Researching a place
- Use Maps for the location, directions, and nearby-place information.
- Use Web for the organization’s own site, policies, accessibility details, menus, or booking instructions.
- Verify hours and availability on the relevant page because place data can change.
Researching a product
- Use Shopping when you need product listings, sellers, or price comparisons.
- Use Web for manuals, specifications, warranty terms, safety notices, and independent explanations.
- Check the exact model, region, and date because specifications and prices can differ.
Troubleshooting when Web is missing or unhelpful
The Web option is not visible
Look for an overflow or additional-filters menu. Filter availability and ordering are dynamic, so the option may not be shown in the first row. You can also try a more specific query or return to the main results view.
The results still contain rich features
Web prioritizes text-based links but does not promise a completely feature-free page. Open the listed pages directly, use more precise terms, and add a site name or domain when you need a particular publisher.
The results are irrelevant
Rewrite the query around the actual task: include the product version, country, date range, file type, or exact phrase. Search for the organization or document title rather than a broad topic, then compare several pages.
The results look unreliable
Do not treat the Web label as an endorsement. Check authorship, evidence, update date, and independent sources. If the subject is consequential, locate a primary authority or official document and use secondary pages only for explanation.
SafeSearch cannot be changed
An administrator may have locked it. Parents, schools, public Wi-Fi providers, and other administrators can enforce the setting, so the control may be unavailable to you. Remember that SafeSearch affects Google Search only and is separate from the Web filter.
Bottom line for choosing a filter
Choose Web when your goal is to read and compare ordinary website pages. Choose Images, Videos, Short Videos, News, Maps, Shopping, Books, or Forums when that specific format is the point of the task. Use SafeSearch independently when you need explicit-content controls. In every case, the filter helps organize discovery; it does not replace checking the source, date, context, and evidence.
