Google Pixel naming has three separate layers: the generation number in the product name, a suffix such as Pro or Fold, and an alphanumeric identifier used in Google’s safety and regulatory records. The number tells you which named generation you are looking at; the suffix identifies a distinct model in that generation; and the code lets you match a particular device to Google’s official documentation. The code is not a character-by-character description of features.
Pixel names contain three different kinds of information
People often use “model number” to mean several different things. A Pixel’s retail name, such as Pixel 10 Pro XL, is not the same identifier as the regulatory code listed by Google, such as G45RY. Treating them as interchangeable is the source of most confusion when checking a phone’s age, accessories, carrier compatibility, or repair parts.
The generation number
The number in a name—Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9, or Pixel 10—is Google’s generation label for that named family. It is useful as a first clue about when the device belongs in Google’s product history. It does not, by itself, tell you the screen size, camera system, processor, wireless bands, storage options, or software-support period. Those details can vary between models carrying the same generation number.

Words and letters following the generation number are part of the marketed model name. Google records Pixel, Pixel Pro, Pixel Pro XL, Pixel Pro Fold, and Pixel A devices as separate models rather than as cosmetic configurations of one phone. A suffix can therefore change the hardware and the compatibility details you need to check.

Do not assume that a suffix has exactly the same technical meaning in every generation. Google’s specifications for the specific generation are the authority. For example, the presence of “XL” or “Fold” tells you which named model you have, but it does not establish a universal screen, battery, camera, hinge, or dimensions rule that applies to every year.
The alphanumeric model code
Google’s safety and regulatory index associates each device with a short code such as GK2MP or GEHN3. These codes are lookup identifiers. Google’s published index connects a code to a device name, but it does not provide a public key explaining what each character means. Reading “G,” “K,” or “2” as a year, carrier, region, or component code would be speculation.
Current Pixel 10 family examples
The following examples show how the retail name, regulatory code, and US Google Store availability date fit together. The dates are purchase-availability entries for the US Google Store, not a worldwide launch calendar.

Google’s specifications and regulatory material groups Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL with the 2025 device year. Pixel 10 Pro Fold is listed for 2025 as well, while the US Store availability table places it in October. Pixel 10a is listed as a 2026 device with March 2026 US Store availability. A model’s release-year grouping and the date it became purchasable in a particular market are related but not identical facts.

How to find the exact Pixel model you own
If the phone turns on, Google’s recommended path takes less than a minute. Use the displayed information rather than identifying the phone from its appearance, because several variants can look similar and a suffix can change accessory or repair compatibility.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Scroll until you see Model or IMEI, as listed in Google’s Pixel help instructions.
- Record the model information exactly as displayed, including letters and numbers.
- Match that information with Google’s official device and regulatory information before making a compatibility or repair decision.
The result may show a marketed name, a model identifier, or both. Preserve the capitalization and every character: a one-character difference can point to a different variant. If you are checking a phone for another person, ask for the complete About phone entry instead of relying on a description such as “the small Pixel 10” or “the Pro model.”
How to work out a Pixel’s year without guessing
Start with the generation number in the name, then confirm the model-specific timing. Google’s availability table states that it shows when a Pixel was available to purchase on the Google Store in the US. That scope matters: a US Store date does not necessarily equal the first sale date in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or another country, and carrier launches can follow a different schedule.

For the Pixel 10 family, the practical reading is:
- Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL: 2025 device group; August 2025 US Google Store availability.
- Pixel 10 Pro Fold: 2025 device group; October 2025 US Google Store availability.
- Pixel 10a: 2026 device group; March 2026 US Google Store availability.
These entries answer “when was this named model available in the US Google Store?” They do not establish when a particular handset was manufactured, activated, imported, or sold by a third-party retailer. A used phone can be purchased long after its original Store availability date.

What Pixel, Pro, XL, Fold, and A mean—and what they do not mean
Base Pixel
The unqualified name, such as Pixel 10, identifies the standard model in that generation’s lineup. It is a complete model name, not a promise that every other model is simply a larger version of it. Check the specifications page when the decision depends on cameras, display, charging, connectivity, or dimensions.
Pixel Pro
Pro is a separate named model. It commonly signals a higher-tier configuration within a generation, but the word alone is not a specification sheet. Confirm the exact generation and its published hardware details before assuming a particular camera, processor, memory, or display feature.
Pixel Pro XL
XL is part of the model name and distinguishes the XL device from the standard Pro. Size-related assumptions are especially risky across generations: the suffix identifies the product, while the generation’s specifications define its actual dimensions, screen, battery, and other hardware.
Pixel Pro Fold
Fold identifies a distinct foldable model, not a case or software mode for a conventional Pixel. It has its own regulatory code and availability entry. Accessories, screen protectors, cases, replacement displays, and repair procedures must be matched to the Fold model specifically.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers

Pixel A
The A suffix identifies another named line within the generation family. Pixel 10a is listed separately from Pixel 10 and has its own code, G4H7L, and its own March 2026 US Store availability entry. Do not infer that an A-series phone shares the same chassis, radios, camera modules, or accessories as the number-only model.
How to compare two Pixel models correctly
When a listing, repair quote, or accessory page uses an imprecise name, use this order of checks:
- Capture the full marketed name. Include the generation number and every suffix: for example, Pixel 10 Pro XL rather than simply Pixel 10.
- Confirm the exact code. Compare the phone’s About phone information with Google’s regulatory listing. For the Pixel 10 family, the codes are GK2MP, GEHN3, G45RY, GU0NP, and G4H7L for the models shown in the table above.
- Check the market. A name and code do not, by themselves, prove that a handset has the same carrier bands, eSIM options, warranty terms, or certification in every country.
- Compare the relevant specifications. Use Google’s specifications for the exact model when the decision involves screen, cameras, processor, storage, charging, connectivity, dimensions, or other hardware.
- Verify the item’s fit or support. An accessory, replacement part, or software instruction that fits one suffix may not fit another even when the generation number is identical.
This method prevents the common error of comparing “Pixel 10” with “Pixel 10 Pro” as though the number were the whole model. The number establishes the family context; the complete name and code establish which device you actually need to support.
Why the code alone cannot answer every compatibility question
Google’s alphanumeric code is valuable for matching an official record, but the published pages do not offer a universal character-by-character decoding table or a global map of every regional variant. Consequently, a code should not be used to invent a meaning for an individual letter or digit.

For network use, verify the exact market and carrier requirements. A family name alone does not establish supported bands, approval status, SIM configuration, or whether a particular carrier will activate the phone. For accessories and repairs, verify the complete model and physical design. A case or screen component labeled only “Pixel 10” may not fit Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, or Pixel 10a.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the generation as the model number
“Pixel 10” is incomplete when the phone is a Pro, Pro XL, Pro Fold, or A model. Record the suffix before ordering anything or comparing prices.
Mistake: decoding the letters yourself
Codes such as GEHN3 are not documented as plain-language feature strings. Use Google’s lookup association instead of assigning meanings to individual characters.

Mistake: calling a US availability date a global launch date
The Store table is explicitly limited to purchase availability on the US Google Store. State that scope whenever you cite August 2025, October 2025, or March 2026.
Mistake: identifying a phone by appearance
Camera bars, colors, and screen proportions can overlap between generations and variants. Settings > About phone gives you a more reliable starting point than a photograph or a seller’s shorthand.
Mistake: assuming a suffix has a permanent definition
Google reuses suffixes as product names, but the hardware associated with them can change. Read the specifications for the generation in question rather than carrying an old assumption forward.
