Google Maps can reveal a detailed record of where a device went, when it moved, and which journeys repeat—if Google Maps Timeline is enabled. Timeline is an opt-in feature, but it is only one part of Google’s location picture. Search Services History, Web & App Activity, device permissions and IP-based estimates can retain different location clues even after Timeline is paused. Understanding what each source records, where it is stored and how to delete it lets you make an informed privacy decision.
What Google Maps Timeline records
Google Maps Help says Timeline is off by default and can be activated only when you opt in. When it is on, precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline on each signed-in device, including periods when Google apps are not open. The record can include visits to places, routes between them, travel dates and approximate arrival or departure times.
Collection is not continuous in the same way for every phone. Google gives navigation as an example in which the device may provide multiple location collections per minute. An inactive phone might contribute a point only every few hours. Battery settings, signal conditions, whether the device is moving, operating-system behavior and the availability of the phone all affect the resulting trail. A gap therefore does not prove that the device stayed in one place.

What a saved visit can show
- Places the device appears to have visited, such as a workplace, shop, school, airport or hotel.
- The sequence and timing of stops during a trip.
- Repeated routes and recurring destinations, which can expose routines such as a regular commute or weekly appointment.
- Travel outside the home area, including dates and the order of locations visited.
Timeline can support features such as commute notifications and aggregate measures like popular visiting times. Google also describes uses connected with fraud prevention and service improvement. Depending on account settings, Google may connect history and advertising interactions with Timeline to estimate whether an ad campaign led to visits to a nearby business. Google says those businesses receive an estimate rather than a personal Timeline record.

What a location trail can—and cannot—tell someone
A sequence of saved places can make regular locations and movements apparent without revealing the purpose of a visit. Several visits to the same address may suggest a routine, but the record alone cannot establish who was present, why they went there or what happened inside. Timeline describes a device’s recorded locations, not a guaranteed account of a person’s life.
Patterns that may become visible
- Routine: repeated morning and evening stops can expose a likely home-to-work pattern.
- Travel behavior: airport, station, hotel and attraction visits can outline a trip.
- Co-occurrence: overlapping routes or repeated visits by several devices may suggest joint activity, but they do not prove a relationship.
- Timing: the time and duration of recorded stops may reveal schedules, while gaps and inaccurate points limit confidence.
Do not treat a recorded location as proof of identity, belief, medical status, relationship or intent. The device could have been shared, left behind, offline, mislocated or used by someone else. Google’s own collection-frequency examples are illustrations, not a guarantee for every account.
What a 2022 study found
A 2022 simulated-travel experiment by Giancarlos Parady, Keita Suzuki, Yuki Oyama and Makoto Chikaraishi tested whether joint activities involving four people could be detected from Google Maps Location History. Under the study’s Android conditions, detection ranged from 22% with the strictest spatiotemporal accuracy criteria to 60% with less strict but still operational criteria. The authors reported markedly worse performance for iPhones. These figures describe that experiment’s participants, devices, thresholds and simulated trips; they are not a universal probability that any person’s real Timeline will reveal a particular activity.

Timeline is not Google’s only location-related record
Pausing Timeline does not automatically pause every setting that can contain location context. The following sources have different contents and controls.
| Source | What it can contain | Location precision and storage | What disabling it does not affect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Timeline | Saved visits, routes and travel history generated from precise device locations. | Stored on each signed-in device; an optional encrypted backup can place a copy on Google’s servers. Timeline is not available in Maps on desktop. | Search Services History, Web & App Activity, device permissions and IP-based estimates. |
| Search Services History | Searches, Maps places viewed, ad clicks and related activity, with general-area location context. | Account-associated history; Google says saved location metadata in this history is automatically deleted after 30 days. | Timeline records and other activity settings. |
| Web & App Activity | Activity across Google services and associated general-area information supplied by a device or inferred from an IP address. | Account-associated activity; exact screens can differ during Google’s gradual settings rollout. | Timeline and device-level location permission. |
| Device location and IP address | Apps and websites may obtain device location when permission is granted; websites can also infer a broad area from the network’s IP address. | Controlled partly by the phone’s operating system and app/browser permissions; IP inference comes from network information. | Changing one account history setting does not remove the other signal. |
How to review and change your settings
Labels vary by Android version, iPhone version and Google’s account rollout. Use the closest current label shown on your device, and confirm the account displayed before changing anything.
1. Inspect Timeline in Google Maps
- Open Google Maps on the phone that may contain the history.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then open Your Timeline.
- Browse the calendar and map for individual visits, routes and dates you do not recognize.
- Use the Timeline settings to pause collection, remove a selected visit or date, or delete all saved Timeline data.
Turning Timeline off stops new Timeline collection according to the setting, but previously saved entries remain until you delete them or they are removed by an automatic-deletion rule.

2. Review Search Services History
- Open your Google Account’s activity or privacy controls.
- Find Search Services History (the label may appear as a Google search or Maps activity control).
- Review searches, places viewed and ad interactions, then delete individual items or the available date range.
- Check its auto-delete option separately from Timeline.
This history can include general-area context even when Timeline is paused. Google says its saved location metadata is automatically deleted after 30 days, but the activity item and other associated records may follow different controls.
3. Review Web & App Activity
- In Google Account activity controls, open Web & App Activity.
- Inspect whether activity from Maps and other services is being saved.
- Check whether the option to include associated location information is enabled.
- Pause the setting or delete selected activity if that matches your privacy goal.
Google says this setting may save general-area location supplied by the device or inferred from an IP address. It is independent of Timeline.
4. Check phone and browser permissions
- Open the operating system’s privacy or location settings.
- Review which apps have location access and whether access is allowed always, only while in use, or not at all.
- Check browser site permissions for maps.google.com and other sites that request location.
- Revisit these permissions after installing an app or changing a phone, because a new device has its own permission state.
Removing an app’s location permission prevents that app from reading the device’s location through the operating system. It does not erase account history already saved and does not stop a website from making a broad IP-based estimate.

Deleting, retaining and exporting Timeline data
Automatic deletion choices
Google’s location policy lists Timeline auto-delete periods of 3, 18 or 36 months, or retaining data until you delete it. Google Safety Center says the first time Location History is enabled, the default is 18 months. Account settings, device type and rollout can change what you see, so verify the selected period in your own controls. Auto-delete is not the same as instantly clearing every copy: an encrypted backup and a device copy have separate handling.
On-device storage and encrypted backup
Google’s current help describes Timeline as device-centered. Each signed-in device can hold its own history. You may separately enable an encrypted backup so the data can be restored or used when changing phones. The backup choice is distinct from the Timeline switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Exporting before changing phones
- Open Timeline on the mobile device that contains the records.
- Use the export option in the current Timeline settings and follow the on-screen instructions for your operating system.
- Store the exported file in a location you control and protect it like any other sensitive location record.
- If you enabled an encrypted backup, review that backup separately when removing the old device.
Google says deleting a Timeline backup does not delete the Timeline stored on the device. Conversely, deleting the device copy does not necessarily remove an account backup. Check both locations before assuming the history is gone. Timeline is not available in Google Maps on desktop, so desktop account pages cannot substitute for the mobile Timeline controls.

Special handling for sensitive places
Google says Timeline visits to places it designates as particularly personal are deleted soon after identification. The designation is not a promise that every sensitive venue will be recognized immediately or correctly. Google also cautions that other settings may still save searches, interactions and photos associated with those places, and that place classifications may not always be up to date.
If a visit matters to your privacy, review Search Services History, Web & App Activity, photo activity and device permissions in addition to Timeline. Do not assume that a sensitive-place deletion removes every related record.
What a VPN can and cannot change
A VPN can make it harder for a website to infer your general area from your IP address. That is a narrow benefit. It does not pause Timeline, remove saved visits, change phone location permissions or delete Search Services History and Web & App Activity. If precise device location is available to an app, changing the network path does not revoke that access.

A practical privacy checklist
- Decide whether you need Timeline’s route and visit features; if not, pause it and delete historical entries you no longer want.
- Check every signed-in phone, because Timeline is stored per device.
- Review encrypted backup status before replacing or resetting a phone.
- Inspect Search Services History and Web & App Activity independently.
- Set an auto-delete period that matches your retention preference, then verify it after Google account changes.
- Audit app and browser location permissions at the operating-system level.
- Remember that IP-based estimates are separate from precise device location.
- When investigating an unfamiliar entry, treat it as a device signal with uncertain accuracy—not proof of a person’s action.
The key takeaway
Enabled Timeline can reveal a surprisingly useful map of a device’s visits, routes and routines, even when Google apps are not actively open. But it is neither a complete diary nor Google’s only location source. For meaningful control, manage Timeline, Search Services History, Web & App Activity, device permissions, backups and network-based signals as separate layers.
