Google Earth’s flight simulator is a desktop exploration feature, not a documented flight-training system. In the installed app for Mac, Windows, or Linux, you can fly an SR22 or F-16 from the current map view or a listed airport. A joystick is optional: mouse and keyboard controls are provided. The simulator shows a flight-style heads-up display (HUD), but Google’s documentation does not establish aerodynamic realism, training suitability, complete aircraft-system modeling, airport coverage, or compatibility with any particular joystick model.

Where Google Earth’s flight simulator runs

The documented feature belongs to the installed Google Earth desktop application. Google lists Mac, Windows, and Linux as supported computer platforms and describes two input choices: a joystick, or a mouse and keyboard. The cited help material does not describe a browser implementation or a mobile version, so you should not assume that opening Google Earth on a phone or in a web tab provides the simulator.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If you are using a web or mobile edition, switching menus or buying a different controller will not create a feature that the cited instructions do not document there. Install and launch the desktop application first, then look for the simulator command in its menus.

  5. Choose a starting point. You can begin from the map view you currently have open or select an airport from the available airport drop-down list.
  6. Select the controller option you intend to use, either a joystick or mouse and keyboard, and start the flight.

If you need to change the aircraft, starting location, or controller after the flight has begun, exit the simulator first. Those choices are made from the launch screen rather than changed in mid-flight.

Aircraft, starting points, and controllers

Choice What Google documents How to interpret it
SR22 Google suggests it for a beginner. Use it as the gentler starting choice described by Google; the documentation does not publish a performance or realism specification.
F-16 Google suggests it for a skilled pilot. It is presented as the more suitable option for an experienced user, without a documented comparison of flight-model accuracy.
Current view Starts from the location shown in your active Google Earth view. Useful when you want to launch over a place you have already navigated to.
Airport list Starts from an airport selected in the available drop-down. Use this when you want a named airport rather than the current camera position. The cited page does not state how extensive the list is.
Joystick Supported as an optional input method. Google names no manufacturer, model, connection standard, compatibility list, or tested device. Follow your joystick’s own setup manual.
Mouse and keyboard Documented alternative to a joystick. No additional controller purchase is required, provided your desktop installation accepts the listed keyboard and mouse input.

How to take off and control the aircraft

Using a joystick

Google’s joystick instructions describe the takeoff as a sequence of broad actions rather than a detailed checklist of aircraft procedures:

  1. Accelerate along the runway.
  2. Pull back to lift off.
  3. After leaving the ground, make small control movements. Large or abrupt inputs are not the technique Google describes.

The page does not specify a joystick axis map, button assignment, calibration routine, or sensitivity value. Those details can vary by device, so consult the controller’s documentation instead of assuming that a particular lever or button is assigned to a specific function.

Using a mouse and keyboard

The documented mouse-and-keyboard scheme uses a few direct commands:

  • Page Up: increase thrust.
  • Mouse movement: control the takeoff movement described by Google.
  • Arrow keys: make course corrections.
  • Alt or Ctrl plus an arrow key: change how quickly the view turns.

For a first attempt, increase thrust with Page Up, use the mouse to perform the takeoff movement, and then make restrained corrections with the arrow keys. The Alt and Ctrl combinations alter turning response; they are not described as new flight controls, so use them when the normal arrow-key rate feels too slow or too fast.

Pause, resume, and exit

Press the spacebar to pause or resume a flight. To leave the simulator, use its on-screen exit control or activate the launch shortcut again. Exiting is also the required way to return to the setup screen when you want to select a different aircraft, location, or controller.

What the HUD shows

The simulator overlays instrument-like information while you fly. These readouts let you observe the state of the simulated aircraft, but their presence alone does not certify that the underlying aerodynamics or systems match a real aircraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
HUD item Displayed information Why it is useful during a flight
Heading Direction of travel. Helps you track whether course corrections are moving you toward the intended direction.
Speed Speed in knots. Provides a numerical indication of how fast the aircraft is moving.
Bank angle How far the aircraft is banked. Shows the amount of roll while turning.
Vertical speed Rate of climb or descent in feet per minute. Distinguishes level flight from a climb or descent and gives the rate of that change.
Throttle Throttle position. Shows the power setting associated with your thrust input.
Rudder Rudder control position. Shows rudder input independently from the other control surfaces.
Aileron Aileron control position. Shows roll-control input.
Elevator Elevator control position. Shows pitch-control input.
Flap and gear indicators Flap and landing-gear status indicators. Lets you see the status of those displayed systems while operating the aircraft.
Pitch angle Aircraft pitch angle. Shows the nose-up or nose-down attitude separately from the climb or descent rate.
Altitude Height above the reference used by the simulator. Provides the altitude readout for monitoring height during flight.

Google’s help page lists these values but does not define a complete instrument manual, explain every unit beyond knots and feet per minute, or promise that the display reproduces the behavior of a certified cockpit.

What you can use it for

  • Geographic exploration: fly over locations represented in Google Earth instead of viewing them only from the normal camera controls.
  • Basic control practice inside the app: experiment with thrust, takeoff movement, turns, bank, pitch, and the displayed flight values.
  • Comparing input styles: use a joystick when you want a dedicated physical controller, or use mouse and keyboard when you prefer not to add hardware.
  • Launching from different places: begin at the current map view or select an airport from the provided list.
  • Observing flight data: watch heading, speed, altitude, vertical speed, attitude, control-surface indicators, flaps, and gear in the HUD.

These are capabilities directly reflected in Google’s feature description. The source does not provide a catalog of missions, multiplayer functions, scoring, recorded flights, weather simulation, or a guaranteed list of airports, so those should not be assumed.

What the documentation does not establish

The simulator looks and behaves like an interactive flight feature, but Google’s cited instructions stop short of several claims readers often see attached to flight simulators.

  • Realism: Google does not evaluate aerodynamic fidelity or publish a realism rating for either aircraft.
  • Training suitability: The help page does not say that the feature teaches real-world piloting, substitutes for instruction, or qualifies as an approved training device.
  • Aircraft-system depth: The listed HUD items do not establish that the simulation models every system in an SR22 or F-16.
  • Airport coverage: Google describes an airport selection list but does not state how many airports it contains or how frequently that list changes.
  • Joystick compatibility: A joystick is supported in principle, but no specific model is named or guaranteed. Do not treat an unlisted controller as officially tested.
  • Web and mobile availability: The cited workflow is for installed desktop Google Earth; it does not document a browser or mobile edition of the feature.

Accordingly, the safest description is “a desktop flight simulator for exploring Google Earth” rather than “a realistic flight-training simulator.” That wording reflects what is documented without claiming that an untested capability is absent.

Choosing between joystick and mouse and keyboard

Situation Most practical documented option Reason
You want to try the simulator immediately Mouse and keyboard Google documents this as an alternative to a joystick, so no dedicated controller is required.
You prefer a physical flight control Joystick Google supports joystick input, but setup and compatibility depend on the device’s own documentation.
You are learning the interface SR22 Google suggests the SR22 for a beginner.
You already have flight experience F-16 Google suggests the F-16 for a skilled pilot.
You want to fly over a place already on screen Current view The simulator can use the active Google Earth view as the starting point.
You want a named departure location Airport drop-down The launch screen provides an airport selection list.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The simulator command is missing

Confirm that you opened the installed desktop application rather than a browser or mobile edition. In the desktop app, use Tools → Enter Flight Simulator. The cited instructions do not describe an equivalent web or mobile command.

The keyboard controls do nothing

Use the documented keys while the simulator has focus: Page Up for thrust, mouse movement for takeoff, arrow keys for course corrections, and the spacebar for pause or resume. If you need to change aircraft, location, or controller, leave the simulator and make the change from its setup screen.

The joystick does not behave as expected

Google identifies joystick input as supported but does not publish a model list, axis assignment, calibration process, or guarantee for a particular device. Check the joystick manufacturer’s manual and reconnect or configure the device there before treating the behavior as a Google Earth compatibility verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find the airport you want

The documented interface offers an available airport drop-down, but Google does not state the list’s coverage. If the airport is not offered, use the current-view starting option after navigating the map to the desired area.

You expected professional training

The help page documents controls and HUD readouts, not certification, instructional lessons, aerodynamic validation, or real-aircraft procedures. Use the feature for exploration and interactive practice inside Google Earth, and rely on qualified instruction and approved training equipment for real-world flying.

The accurate expectation

Google Earth’s flight simulator gives desktop users a compact way to move through the globe with two selectable aircraft, two documented input methods, configurable starting points, and a HUD containing common flight values. Its strongest documented use is interactive geographic exploration with simple flight controls. Its boundaries are equally important: Google does not establish that it is realistic enough for pilot training, does not document a complete simulation of aircraft systems or airport coverage, and does not guarantee any particular joystick. Treat those limits as part of the feature’s definition when deciding whether it meets your needs.
