Google Chrome is a web browser: an app for opening websites and interacting with web content on a computer or mobile device. Google offers it as a no-charge download for supported devices. Chrome is not a search engine, although you can use Google Search or another search service through it.
What is Google Chrome?
Google Chrome is browser software published by Google. Like other web browsers, it loads websites so you can read pages, watch videos, use web apps, and interact with online services. It is an application, not a computer or a website.
Google provides Chrome as a no-charge download, but supported operating systems and installation requirements vary. Check Google’s current Chrome download and system requirements for your device before installing it.
Is Chrome a browser or a search engine?
Chrome is the browser—the software that opens and displays websites. A search engine is a service that helps you find web pages. You can enter a search in Chrome’s address bar, which can use Google Search or another search engine. Google notes that the default search engine can vary and that some Chrome features depend on which one is selected. See Google’s explanation of searching in Chrome.

How does Chrome get updates?
Google says Chrome can update automatically when a new version is available for a device. Updates are usually applied in the background after you close and reopen the browser. Google’s product page states that updates arrive every four weeks; that is a product-page description, not a guarantee that every platform or device receives an update on the same schedule. For update instructions, see Google Chrome Help.
