ATO stands for Alpha Tau Omega, a college fraternity founded in 1865. It describes its purpose in terms of brotherhood and leadership development, alongside scholarship, character, and service. Those are the fraternity’s stated aims, not guaranteed outcomes for every member.
What does ATO stand for?
ATO is short for Alpha Tau Omega. The organization calls itself “America’s Leadership Development Fraternity” and presents brotherhood and leadership development as central to its identity. ATO’s homepage describes its mission; its joining information also highlights scholarship, character, service, friendship, and networking.
When and why was Alpha Tau Omega founded?
Alpha Tau Omega dates its founding to September 11, 1865, and names Otis Allan Glazebrook, Erskine Mayo Ross, and Alfred Marshall as its founders. ATO’s history account says Glazebrook invited Ross and Marshall to his home at 114 East Clay Street in Richmond, Virginia, and read them the constitution he had written.
ATO frames its founding as an effort to foster reconciliation and brotherhood after the Civil War, and describes itself as the first fraternity founded after the war. That reconciliation narrative is the fraternity’s own account of its history. Its facts and firsts page also identifies Virginia Military Institute as the place of founding.

What does ATO say membership represents?
ATO says it is built on Christian principles while welcoming men of any faith or no faith, as stated in its 2023 Green Book. That description does not present a particular faith as a membership requirement. The fraternity’s materials describe member education and chapter participation as part of the experience, with an emphasis on leadership, brotherhood, scholarship, character, and service.
These statements describe the organization’s goals and how it presents membership. They do not establish that every chapter or member has the same experience, nor do they guarantee academic, social, or leadership results. ATO’s benefits page discusses research-based claims about membership outcomes, but those claims should be read as the organization’s presentation unless the underlying studies are reviewed independently.

What are ATO’s colors, flower, and nicknames?
ATO lists azure and gold as its colors and the white tea rose as its flower. Common nicknames include Taus, Alpha Taus, and ATOs. The organization says Glazebrook designed its badge in 1865 and that Richard N. Brooke, an art instructor at VMI, painted the Grand Seal in 1872. These details appear on ATO’s official facts page.

How can you find out about a campus chapter?
