Wave 1 Wi‑Fi is the Wi‑Fi Alliance’s initial certification profile for 802.11ac, the wireless standard also known as Wi‑Fi 5. It was a certification phase—not a separate IEEE standard—and covered a subset of the features associated with the full 802.11ac amendment.
What does “Wave 1” mean?
Wi‑Fi Alliance certification checked whether products met a defined set of interoperability requirements. For its initial 802.11ac certification, the Alliance used a mature Draft 3.0 of the amendment. The IEEE completed 802.11ac at the end of 2013, after Wave 1 certification began in mid-2013, according to Cisco’s 2014 technical white paper.
That timing helps explain the label: Wave 1 describes an early certification profile for products implementing 802.11ac, rather than a new standard alongside 802.11ac. The profile captured a subset of the amendment’s capabilities; individual devices could differ in optional features.

Cisco’s historical comparison describes Wave 1 as operating in the 5 GHz band, with 20, 40, and 80 MHz channel bandwidths. It does not mean every 802.11ac capability was required or present in every Wave 1 product.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Band: 5 GHz, subject to the regulatory rules that apply in a region.
- Channel widths: 20, 40, and 80 MHz were listed as mandatory for the profile.
- Spatial streams: Support depended on device category; the paper’s draft table lists optional support up to three streams.
- MU‑MIMO: Cisco’s comparison does not list it for Wave 1.
How did Wave 1 differ from Wave 2?
Wave 2 referred to later certification possibilities described in Cisco’s 2014 comparison. The table below reflects that paper’s historical profile comparison, not a guarantee about every product sold as 802.11ac.
| Capability | Wave 1 profile | Later or potential Wave 2 profile |
|---|---|---|
| Spectrum | 5 GHz; available channels vary by regulatory domain. | The paper discusses the fuller amendment’s sub‑6 GHz spectrum, excluding 2.4 GHz. |
| Channel bandwidth | 20, 40, and 80 MHz mandatory. | 160 MHz and 80+80 MHz optional. |
| Spatial streams | Requirements varied by device category; the draft table lists optional support up to three. | The paper describes later certification possibilities up to four streams. |
| MU‑MIMO | Not listed in Cisco’s Wave 1 comparison. | Listed as optional in the later certification comparison. |
These distinctions describe certification profiles, not a simple rule that every Wave 2 router has every listed feature or that every Wave 1 device has identical capabilities. Check a particular device’s specifications to establish what it supports.

Is Wave 1 the same as Wi‑Fi 5?
Not exactly. Wi‑Fi 5 is another name for the 802.11ac generation. Wave 1 is the name commonly used for its initial Wi‑Fi Alliance certification profile. A device identified as 802.11ac may support features beyond the Wave 1 profile, so the two labels are related but not interchangeable in every context.
Will a Wave 1 router work with older Wi‑Fi devices?
802.11ac was designed for backward compatibility with 802.11a/n devices, as Cisco’s paper explains. That is a design-level statement, not a promise that every combination will connect under every configuration. Actual interoperability depends on the router, client device, and settings. A router’s specifications and configuration are the practical checks if an older device cannot connect.
