To hear Dolby Atmos from Apple TV, you need an Apple TV 4K, a film or show with an Atmos audio track, and a compatible audio setup. Apple supports HomePod, a Dolby Atmos-capable TV, an Atmos soundbar, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver. The right choice depends on the equipment you already own—and, for a soundbar or receiver, how you connect it.
Equipment options for Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K can play Atmos through several kinds of home audio equipment; a separate AV receiver is not required if another supported setup suits your room. Apple TV automatically selects the highest-quality format supported by both the connected setup and the content. Apple’s Dolby Atmos and surround-sound guidance describes these routes:

How to connect a soundbar or AV receiver
For an Atmos soundbar or receiver, use this HDMI path:

- Connect Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the Atmos-capable soundbar or receiver.
- Connect the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to the TV.
- Check the manuals or specifications for HDMI pass-through support for your TV’s video formats, including HDR10 or Dolby Vision if you use them.
Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos audio does not work over ARC. For this setup, do not route Apple TV’s audio through the TV’s ARC connection; connect Apple TV directly to the soundbar or receiver instead. Apple’s connection guidance

What HomePod mini and eARC can—and cannot—do
HomePod mini does not provide Dolby Atmos
HomePod mini is not an Atmos speaker. Dolby surround formats played through HomePod mini are rendered in mono or stereo, rather than as Dolby Atmos. Choose a full-size HomePod or one of the other supported audio paths if Atmos is essential. Apple Support Apple’s HomePod home theater guidance
Using eARC to send TV audio to HomePod
eARC is useful when you want HomePod to play audio from a TV-connected source, not just Apple TV content. Apple documents this feature for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) paired with an eARC-capable TV. Connect Apple TV to the TV’s HDMI port marked eARC, set HomePod as the default audio output, and turn on Play Television Audio under Audio Return Channel. Check whether Dolby Atmos is working
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and check whether Dolby Atmos is available and enabled. If Atmos is not offered, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to change. Apple Support
- Open the audio information for the specific film or show and look for the Dolby Atmos indicator. The title must have an Atmos track for Atmos playback to be available. Apple Support
- If using HomePod, make sure HomePod and Apple TV are assigned to the same room in the Home app. Apple Support
How to choose the right setup
- Already have an Atmos TV? Check its Atmos support for the HDMI input you plan to use; you may not need additional audio hardware.
- Want a simpler external-speaker setup? An Atmos soundbar is one of Apple’s supported options. Confirm its Atmos capability, HDMI input and pass-through support, and compatibility with your TV’s video formats before buying.
- Want separate speakers and room to expand? An Atmos-enabled receiver is another supported route, but it adds receiver and speaker requirements.
- Prefer Apple’s speaker ecosystem? A full-size HomePod or stereo pair can serve as the Apple TV home theater audio output; HomePod mini is not an Atmos substitute.
