Enhanced protection in Google Messages is an optional security mode for scam conversations and suspicious links. It adds cloud-assisted analysis for complicated, slowly developing scams, on-device Gemini Nano checks for unfamiliar links, and more prominent warnings before you open a link from someone who is not in your contacts.
It is not a guarantee that every scam will be caught, it does not make SMS or MMS end-to-end encrypted, and support depends heavily on your phone, Android build, country, and the feature layer being used.
What Enhanced protection adds
Google describes Enhanced protection as its strongest set of defenses against complex scam threats. The mode builds on the Scam Detection already included in Spam Protection rather than replacing it. Its three additions address different points in a scam: understanding a conversation that changes over time, checking a link before it is opened, and slowing down a rushed tap.

1. Cloud-assisted analysis for complex conversations
Enhanced Scam Detection can use capable cloud Gemini models through Private AI Compute to evaluate message context and look for signs of scammer intent. This is intended for conversational scams that begin innocently and become suspicious over several messages—for example, a sender who first starts a casual exchange and later introduces an urgent payment, account, job, delivery, or investment request.

The analysis is described as taking place in Private AI Compute, an encrypted, dedicated environment that Google says is inaccessible to anyone else, including Google. That is different from ordinary cloud processing tied directly to an account or message history. It is still an automated security analysis, not a promise that a person has reviewed the conversation.
2. Smarter checks for unfamiliar links
On supported phones, on-device Gemini Nano examines unfamiliar links and can combine that local analysis with real-time web signals. The purpose is to identify suspicious destinations or link context before you visit them. A link that looks harmless in isolation can be risky when paired with a message asking you to sign in, pay a fee, verify an account, or install software; the added context is what this layer is designed to assess.
3. A stronger pause before you tap
Enhanced protection redesigns warnings for links sent by numbers that are not saved in your contacts. The warning gives you more context and an extra moment to stop, rather than treating the link as an ordinary tap target. It is a friction layer: you can still choose to continue, but the decision is made more deliberate.

How this differs from the existing Scam Detection
Google Messages already includes basic Scam Detection as part of Spam Protection. Google says it is on by default and focuses on suspicious patterns in SMS, MMS, and RCS conversations with people outside your contacts. When it detects a likely scam, Messages can warn you and provide options to dismiss the alert or report and block the sender.

Enhanced protection broadens the type of reasoning available for difficult cases. Basic detection is described as using on-device machine-learning models for known spam patterns. Enhanced protection adds Private AI Compute for complex conversational context and Gemini Nano link analysis on eligible devices.

Does Enhanced protection read your texts?
There is no single yes-or-no answer because Google Messages uses several processing paths.
- Basic Scam Detection: Google says known-pattern detection is performed on the device. Spam Protection may upload a message URL to Google to check whether the destination is malicious, and Google Messages Help says it can ephemerally process unencrypted message contents for spam prevention and model improvement.
- Enhanced conversational analysis: The additional cloud analysis runs in Private AI Compute. Google says data is encrypted in that dedicated environment and inaccessible to anyone else, including Google.
- Reporting a conversation: If you report a conversation as spam, Google says the reported message and its contents are sent to Google for analysis. Reporting is therefore a separate data-sharing event from ordinary automated protection.
These protections are automated security checks, not a statement that every message is permanently stored or routinely read by staff. The practical privacy distinction is whether the feature can complete its work on the phone, uses the protected Private AI Compute path, or is triggered by your decision to report a conversation.
Is Google Messages still end-to-end encrypted?
Only eligible RCS chats receive Google Messages end-to-end encryption. Google says encryption applies when both participants use Google Messages with RCS chats enabled and the phones have a data or Wi-Fi connection. Look for the lock icon in the conversation to confirm that state.

SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted in Google Messages. An RCS conversation can also fall back to SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable or data access is lost; the lock icon will no longer indicate an encrypted RCS exchange. Enhanced protection does not change that transport limitation. Scam analysis and link warnings are security features, not an encryption upgrade.
Which phones get each Enhanced protection layer?
Google’s October 2026 Android Security announcement lists different requirements for different parts of the feature. A phone can qualify for one layer and not another.

“Android 6 and newer” for the checkpoint should not be read as a guarantee that an older phone gets every Enhanced protection capability. The cloud Scam Detection and Gemini Nano requirements are stricter, and manufacturers can determine when a compatible update reaches a particular model.
How to use the warnings and controls
When a scam warning appears
- Read the warning and the surrounding conversation instead of tapping the link immediately.
- Use the available option to dismiss the alert if you believe the message is legitimate, or choose the report-and-block option when the sender is attempting a scam.
- Verify the request through a separate, trusted channel. Do not use a phone number, email address, or website supplied in the suspicious message.
A warning is an assessment, not proof of guilt. A legitimate sender can trigger a warning when the conversation resembles known abuse patterns, while a new scam can avoid detection.

How to report a conversation
Use the report option shown with the Scam Detection warning or the conversation’s spam controls. Google says reporting sends the message and its contents to Google for analysis. Do this when you want to contribute the specific conversation to spam investigation; do not assume reporting is a private, device-only action.
How to turn off Spam Protection
When the setting is available on your phone, open Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection. Turning off Spam Protection removes the basic filtering and detection controls associated with that setting. Because Enhanced protection is an opt-in mode and feature availability varies, your phone may show different controls or may not expose every layer yet.

It cannot promise complete detection
Google has not published a feature-specific detection rate, false-positive rate, or independent test result for Enhanced protection. The announcement gives one overall volume figure: AI-powered Scam Detection in Phone by Google and Google Messages flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts each month, according to Google in 2026. That is a count of suspected items, not a success rate, and it does not show how many scams were missed or how often legitimate messages were flagged.
It cannot make an unsafe request safe
A message can pass a check and still be fraudulent. Criminals can use newly registered domains, shortened links, compromised legitimate accounts, image-based instructions, or social engineering that does not match known patterns. Treat requests for passwords, one-time codes, remote access, gift cards, cryptocurrency, urgent transfers, or identity documents as high risk even when no warning appears.

It cannot inspect every link with Gemini Nano
The Gemini Nano layer is limited to the listed supported devices and selected models. Other phones may still receive the broader unfamiliar-link checkpoint or basic Spam Protection without the same on-device analysis. Real-time web signals can also change as a site changes; a clean result at one moment is not a permanent reputation certificate.
It cannot preserve encryption after an RCS fallback
If an RCS chat loses the conditions required for encryption, Messages can downgrade to SMS or MMS. Check the lock icon rather than assuming that a conversation that was encrypted earlier remains encrypted now.
It cannot hide a report from Google
Reporting spam deliberately transmits the reported message and its contents for analysis. Users who need to preserve sensitive material should understand that consequence before selecting the report control.

Why scammers may still get through
- New tactics: A campaign can be too new to match established patterns.
- Slow persuasion: A scammer may build trust over days before making the fraudulent request.
- Trusted accounts: A compromised contact’s number can look familiar even though the person no longer controls it.
- Channel changes: The conversation may move from RCS to SMS, email, a social network, or a voice call, where Google Messages protections no longer apply in the same way.
- User override: Warnings are designed to inform and delay; they cannot technically prevent a determined user from continuing in every case.
A practical decision checklist
Use the following sequence when a message asks you to act quickly:
- Check whether the sender is saved in your contacts and whether the lock icon shows an encrypted RCS chat.
- Read the entire conversation for sudden urgency, secrecy, payment demands, login requests, or requests for verification codes.
- Do not open an unfamiliar link. If a warning appears, stop and verify the organization through a website or number you locate independently.
- Never share a one-time passcode, password, recovery phrase, or remote-access approval in response to a message.
- Report and block the conversation when it is clearly fraudulent, remembering that reporting sends its contents to Google.
- Keep Spam Protection enabled unless you have a specific reason to disable it, because Enhanced protection builds on that baseline rather than replacing it.
Bottom line
Enhanced protection improves Google Messages’ defenses in three targeted ways: Private AI Compute can analyze complicated scam conversations, Gemini Nano can check unfamiliar links on selected phones, and redesigned warnings create more time to reconsider a risky tap. Its limits are equally important: availability is fragmented, Google publishes no feature-specific accuracy rate, reporting a message sends its contents for analysis, and only qualifying RCS chats—not SMS or MMS—are end-to-end encrypted. Treat the feature as an additional warning and filtering layer, not as a substitute for verifying unexpected requests yourself.
