NVIDIA’s stock price is driven by what investors expect the company to earn and generate in cash in the future—not by its latest revenue figure alone. Data Center demand is currently the most visible company-specific driver: in the quarter ended July 26, 2026, that business supplied most of NVIDIA’s revenue. But whether the shares are attractively valued depends on the future growth, margins, cash generation and risks investors expect at the price they pay.

What drives NVIDIA’s stock price?

A share price reflects investors’ changing estimates of a company’s future earnings and cash flows, adjusted for risk. New results matter because they update those estimates. The market reaction depends on how the results and outlook compare with expectations already built into the price.

That is why a company can report rapid growth and still see its shares fall: investors may have expected even faster growth, stronger margins or a more favorable outlook. Conversely, results that look modest in isolation can support a rising price if they exceed expectations. This is a general valuation principle, not a claim about a particular NVIDIA share-price move.

Why does NVIDIA’s business performance matter?

Data Center demand is the leading operating driver in the latest reported quarter

In its earnings release dated August 26, 2026, NVIDIA reported $96.2 billion in revenue for Q2 FY2027, up 106% year over year. Data Center generated $89.0 billion, up 117%, meaning it accounted for most of the quarter’s reported revenue. These are company-reported results for the quarter ended July 26, 2026—not forecasts or measures of fair value.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

That concentration makes customer investment in AI infrastructure, the pace of deployments and NVIDIA’s ability to turn demand into shipped products and recognized sales central to the current business outlook. CEO Jensen Huang characterized the opportunity in the earnings release this way: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That is management’s view of the opportunity, not independent confirmation that future demand or sales will meet expectations.

Growth has to translate into durable earnings and cash

For the same quarter, NVIDIA reported a 75.0% GAAP gross margin and diluted EPS of $2.46 on a GAAP basis and $2.22 on a non-GAAP basis. Keep the accounting bases separate when comparing results or calculating a valuation multiple. NVIDIA said its non-GAAP treatment changed beginning in FY2027 to include stock-based compensation, so comparisons across periods should account for that change.

Revenue growth alone does not show how much cash remains after operating costs, investment and other demands on the business. Investors therefore watch whether margins and earnings hold up as product mix, manufacturing costs, supply conditions and competition change. NVIDIA’s FY2026 revenue was $215.9 billion, up 65%, according to its FY2026 results; that historical growth provides context, but it does not establish what future growth will be.

What can make NVIDIA stock go up or down?

  • AI infrastructure demand and deployment: Customer spending must translate into orders, shipments and recognized revenue. A change in deployment pace or spending plans could alter expectations for Data Center growth.
  • Product performance and roadmap execution: Investors assess whether products deliver useful performance and efficiency, arrive on schedule and remain attractive relative to alternatives. NVIDIA identifies technological development, competition, product acceptance and possible product defects as risks to actual results.
  • Margins and earnings quality: Even with rising sales, weaker margins or earnings can disappoint investors. Compare GAAP with GAAP and adjusted with adjusted, noting the FY2027 non-GAAP accounting change described above.
  • Manufacturing, packaging and supply: NVIDIA relies on third parties to manufacture, assemble, package and test products. Capacity limits or disruptions can constrain shipments or affect costs; changes in supply and demand can also create inventory exposure.
  • Competition and customer alternatives: Rivals, competing products and customers’ own chip-development efforts could affect demand, pricing or market share. NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q, filed August 27, 2026, identifies these as potential risks.
  • Export controls and regulation: The same filing said that, as of the end of Q2 FY2027, restrictions had effectively foreclosed NVIDIA from China’s data-center compute market. Export rules and other policy details can change, so this statement describes the company’s position at that quarter-end, not a permanent forecast.
  • Capital returns: Dividends and repurchases can affect shareholder returns and the number of shares outstanding. NVIDIA announced an additional $150 billion share-repurchase authorization in October 2026. An authorization is permission to repurchase shares, not evidence that the full amount has been spent; actual purchases and the prices paid matter.
  • Market conditions and valuation: Interest rates, risk appetite and investors’ required returns can influence the multiple investors are willing to pay. No date-stamped share price, interest-rate comparison or consensus forecast is established here, so these factors do not support a numerical claim about NVIDIA’s current valuation.

How to assess NVIDIA’s valuation

Valuation asks whether the price investors pay is reasonable relative to a defined set of financial results or expectations. No single multiple answers that question. Choose a date, use consistent accounting and share-count assumptions, and make the forecast basis explicit—analyst consensus, company guidance or your own scenario. The available company results and risk disclosures do not include a contemporaneous stock quote or consensus forecast, so they cannot by themselves establish whether the shares are cheap or expensive today.

Approach What it compares What to check
Trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) Share price against earnings already reported. Use a dated share price and a stated GAAP or adjusted earnings basis. Past earnings may not represent future growth or margins.
Forward P/E Share price against forecast earnings. Identify whose forecast is being used and when it was published. Small changes in growth or margin assumptions can materially affect the result.
Cash-flow measures Share price or company value against cash generation, depending on the measure chosen. Specify the cash-flow definition and account for reinvestment needs, working capital and share count. Earnings and cash flow are not interchangeable.
Growth and margin scenarios Implied future results under stated assumptions. Make assumptions about revenue growth, margins, cash generation, reinvestment and dilution visible; compare a range of plausible cases rather than treating one forecast as certain.

A high multiple does not, by itself, prove overvaluation. It means the price depends on assumptions about future growth, profitability and risk that deserve scrutiny. A sound comparison also keeps the date, share count and accounting basis consistent across the share price, forecast and valuation metric.

What the reported figures do—and do not—tell you

NVIDIA’s results show exceptionally strong recent growth and a business heavily weighted toward Data Center. They do not determine a fair value for the stock: that requires a dated market price and explicit assumptions about future revenue, margins, cash flow, investment and dilution. Company guidance is also uncertain; NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 earnings release states that forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future performance and speak only as of their date.
