There is no single battery drain that is greatest for every phone. High screen brightness, background app activity, poor cellular signal, GPS use, streaming and demanding games can all contribute; the biggest factor for you depends on your device and how you use it. Start with your phone’s Battery settings to see what used power on the days it drained quickly.
What usually drains a phone battery?
Think of battery use in five categories rather than a universal ranking. Apple and Google describe common contributors, but neither publishes a cross-device comparison proving that one cause is always the largest.
- Screen use: A bright display and long periods of screen-on activity use power. Navigation, video and graphics-heavy games can keep the screen active for extended periods.
- Background activity: Apps may continue working when they are not open on screen. Apple gives directions, music playback, photo syncing and mail fetching as examples.
- Signal and connectivity: Weak cellular coverage can contribute to faster drain. Streaming, tethering and calls while moving between activities also use connectivity.
- Location and processing: Prolonged GPS use and demanding tasks such as gaming can increase battery use.
- Battery condition: Rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time. A worn battery can mean less time between charges even if your habits have not changed.
These categories overlap: a navigation session, for example, may keep the screen on, use GPS and rely on a cellular connection. The useful question is which activity or condition stands out on your particular phone.
How to find what is draining your battery
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the usage chart and app and system activity for today and previous days.
- Look for apps or activity that were on screen, working in the background, using location, or active during low cellular coverage. Compare a fast-drain day with a typical day.

On Android
Open your device’s battery settings and review battery use. The exact menu names and available controls differ by manufacturer and Android version. Google also recommends considering Battery Saver, adaptive battery and restrictions for apps with high battery use. Its guidance is here: Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.
What to change after you identify a likely cause
Make one practical change at a time, then compare the battery usage view again. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.

- If screen use stands out, lower brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- If background activity stands out, limit unnecessary background work or notifications for the relevant app.
- If GPS is a frequent contributor, limit location access for apps that do not need it continuously.
- If mobile coverage is poor, use Wi‑Fi when it is available; Apple says Wi‑Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks.
- If navigation, streaming or gaming dominates, reduce time spent in those activities when you need to conserve charge.
- If battery health indicates a problem, follow the device’s service guidance rather than assuming a settings change will restore battery capacity.
Apple also notes that background work after an iOS update may temporarily affect battery life. If the drain began immediately after updating, its advice is to wait a few days before reassessing. For more suggestions, see If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly.
When battery health may be the issue
If your phone drains quickly even on days with modest screen time and little demanding activity, check its battery health information if available. Apple says rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan and provides battery health details on supported devices. If the phone indicates that service may be needed, use the manufacturer’s service guidance for your model.
