Choose internet speeds by looking at what your household does at the same time—not just one app’s minimum. Start with the highest-resolution stream or video call in use, account for other concurrent streams, calls, and downloads, and check upload speed separately for calls and sending files. The figures below are service-specific guidance, not guarantees for a whole home.

How much download speed does streaming need?

Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are per-stream recommendations for Netflix, not a complete household plan recommendation; Netflix notes that other factors can affect streaming quality. Netflix’s recommended internet speeds are a useful starting point for estimating video demand.

Netflix video quality Recommended speed per stream
720p 3 Mbps or higher
1080p 5 Mbps or higher
4K 15 Mbps or higher

For multiple people watching simultaneously, count each active stream at its intended quality, then include other activity. The FCC’s 2014 household guide distinguishes single high-demand uses from multiple simultaneous high-demand uses and cautions that real network capacity may need to exceed application estimates to avoid buffering, packet loss, and delay. Those FCC estimates are historical context, not current minimums. FCC 14-113

How much upload and download speed do video calls need?

Video calls send your camera and microphone upstream as well as receive other participants’ video, so upload matters alongside download. Zoom’s published examples vary by call type and resolution:

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Zoom call example Upload Download
One-to-one, 720p 1.2 Mbps 1.2 Mbps
One-to-one, 1080p 3.8 Mbps 3.0 Mbps
Group meeting, 720p 2.6 Mbps 1.8 Mbps

These are Zoom bandwidth estimates, not guarantees for every network or a whole-house plan. Zoom describes its figures as “a general guide” reflecting cumulative bandwidth a product may use in general usage and with meeting features and selected video resolutions. See Zoom’s bandwidth guidance.

A household can need more upload capacity than one call’s estimate when several people are on calls, sending files, backing up photos, or otherwise transmitting data at once. In a 2024 order, the FCC discussed simultaneous household use and cited Zoom requirements including 2.6–3.8 Mbps upload for group calls and 3.8 Mbps upload for a higher-quality one-to-one call. What internet speed do you need for gaming?

There is no universal Mbps figure supported here that guarantees responsive online gaming. The FCC’s 2014 guide includes online gaming among household activities that can contribute to demand, but it does not establish a current platform-wide minimum. A game’s network needs can depend on the specific game and service, so check the current support information for the game or platform you use rather than treating a generic download-speed tier as a guarantee.

Download capacity is only one part of how play feels. Latency and connection stability are distinct from the amount of data your connection can download; a plan’s advertised maximum speed does not guarantee performance in every room or at peak times. If a game feels laggy despite adequate speed, assess connection quality separately rather than assuming a higher Mbps number alone will solve it.

How to estimate the speed your household needs

  1. List what happens at the same time. Count the streams and their resolutions, video calls, game use, large downloads, and other active household activity.
  2. Estimate streaming demand. Use the service’s recommendation for each stream; for Netflix, the cited per-stream figures are 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K.
  3. Check both directions for calls. Compare the applicable video-call estimates against your plan’s upload and download speeds, especially if multiple people may call concurrently.
  4. Compare available plans by both advertised download and upload. Treat advertised maximums as plan figures, not a promise of the speed every device will see at every time and location in the home.
  5. Troubleshoot stability separately if the experience disappoints. A speed number alone does not describe latency or connection consistency.

How to interpret national broadband benchmarks

In a 2023 notice, the FCC proposed a fixed broadband benchmark of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. That is policy context, not an individual streaming, gaming, or video-call requirement or a personalized plan recommendation. The same FCC source cites a Consortium for School Networking recommendation of 12 Mbps upload per student; that is an education-connectivity benchmark, not a general household video-call minimum.
