Callum Vinson plays young Jason Voorhees in Crystal Lake, but the series is keeping his complete transformed appearance under wraps. October 6 reporting confirms that Vinson wears prosthetics; it does not reveal the finished look. The story presents Jason as a bullied child before the drowning, rather than the killer familiar from later franchise lore.
What does young Jason look like in Crystal Lake?
Vinson wears prosthetics to portray Jason, whose head deformation is part of the character’s story. The complete design was still being withheld as a premiere surprise in the October 6 report from Gizmodo. That means the reporting confirms a prosthetic transformation, not the precise appearance of the finished makeup; descriptions or images beyond that would go further than the available details.
How long did the makeup take?
In an Entertainment Weekly interview published October 6, 2026, Vinson said his first full transformation for a screen test took about four-and-a-half hours. The makeup team later reduced the process to about an hour and a half for filming. Those figures describe Vinson’s production experience, not a general makeup-industry standard.
Who is Callum Vinson playing?
Vinson, identified by Entertainment Weekly as 12 years old, plays Jason before the drowning associated with the franchise’s backstory. He described the character as a boy who wants to fit in but is bullied because of his head deformation: “He’s just a normal boy and he just wants to fit in with everybody, but since he had this deformation in his head, he got bullied a lot.”
#1 Best Overall
- 7" scale action figure
- Includes two interchangeable heads and is loaded with accessories
- Window box packaging
That is Vinson’s description of the character and the show’s framing. It distinguishes this child version of Jason from the murderous figure audiences know from the broader franchise, without suggesting that a real person’s medical condition predicts violence.
Does Jason wear the hockey mask in the first season?
Not as part of the first season’s story, according to the October 6 Entertainment Weekly interview. Vinson wore a mask behind the scenes, but the familiar hockey mask is not the one young Jason wears in the season’s narrative. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane says another mask appears and its origin connects to the story. He described it this way: “There is a mask. It might be a different mask than fans are used to, but it will not be a different mask than fans have seen.”

- Head turns and looks amazing
- Jason Voorhees as never seen before
- PREMIUM VINYL MATERIAL - Made from high-quality, durable vinyl, this collectible is built to last and withstand daily wear, ensuring long-lasting enjoyment for fans and collectors alike
Kane also said the makeup approach aims for a more grounded, contemporary treatment: “But we’re trying to do something a little bit more grounded and a little bit up-to-date. We’re stepping away from words like ‘freak’ and stepping more into words like ‘outcast’ and ‘other.’” The interview does not disclose the full prosthetics design or explain the mask’s origin in detail.
