Pressing the Windows logo key and the Print Screen key together captures your entire screen and saves it as an image file. In current Windows 10 and Windows 11 documentation, Microsoft lists the destination as the Screenshots subfolder inside your Pictures folder. Print Screen on its own does something different: it copies the screen image to the clipboard instead of saving a file.
What Win + Print Screen does
The combination is Windows logo key + PrtScn. It takes a full-screen screenshot of everything displayed on the main screen at that moment and writes it straight to disk. You do not need to open an app, paste anything, or choose a location. Microsoft’s keyboard shortcut reference for Windows describes this as a full-screen capture saved to the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures.
Where the screenshot is saved
Open File Explorer and go to This PC > Pictures > Screenshots. Each capture is saved as a PNG file with a sequential name, so a new capture does not overwrite an earlier one. If the Screenshots folder does not appear, press the shortcut once, then refresh the Pictures folder. The folder is created on first use.

Because the file is written directly to the folder, the image is not available to paste until you open it or copy the file yourself.

How Print Screen alone differs
Pressing PrtScn without the Windows key captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. Microsoft’s support article on copying window or screen contents states: “Pressing PRINT SCREEN captures an image of your entire screen and copies it to the Clipboard in your computer’s memory.” To use the image, paste it with Ctrl + V into a document, an email, an image editor, or a chat window. Nothing is saved to the Screenshots folder unless you paste the image into a program and save it there.
Alt + PrtScn works the same way, but captures only the active window, and it also goes to the clipboard.

Choosing the right screenshot method
The three main choices differ in what they capture and where the result goes. The table below sets them side by side.
Recommended Free Tools
| Shortcut | What it captures | Where the result goes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows logo key + PrtScn | Entire screen | Saved as a file in Pictures > Screenshots | Quick full-screen record that needs no pasting |
| PrtScn | Entire screen | Clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V | Inserting a full-screen image into another document |
| Alt + PrtScn | Active window only | Clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V | Capturing one application window |
| Windows logo key + Shift + S | Rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen area you choose | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for the selected capture | Capturing only part of the screen |
| Windows logo key + Shift + R | Video clip of a selected area | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay in video mode | Recording a short screen movement rather than a still image |
Other Snipping Tool shortcuts
Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay for selecting part of the screen. Microsoft says the tool supports rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen captures. Use this when the full screen would include content you do not want to share.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Some compact and laptop keyboards do not have a dedicated PrtScn key. Microsoft’s shortcut reference notes that Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar may take a screenshot on such devices. This combination is device-specific: some manufacturers assign it, others do not, and it may not produce the same save or clipboard behavior described above. If it does nothing, check your laptop’s manual or the manufacturer’s support pages for the screenshot key mapping.

If you use a frequent workflow that depends on PrtScn, a USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is a practical alternative, though it is not required.
Limits to keep in mind
- The capture covers the screen as displayed. It does not capture content hidden behind other windows or content that a program blocks from screen capture.
- Button labels and behavior can vary with keyboard hardware, Windows version, and customized shortcut settings. If a combination does not behave as described, test it in a simple app such as Notepad or Paint first.
- The Microsoft sources describing these behaviors apply to current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases; older versions may save or copy differently.
Quick troubleshooting
- Confirm the combination: press and hold the Windows logo key, then press PrtScn. Release both keys after the screen flashes or dims briefly.
- Open Pictures > Screenshots in File Explorer. If the file is not there, check whether your OneDrive folder redirection has moved the Pictures folder.
- If you pressed PrtScn alone and cannot find a file, that is expected. Paste with Ctrl + V into an application and save from there.
The Bottom Line
Use Windows logo key + PrtScn when you want a full-screen image saved as a file in Pictures > Screenshots. Use PrtScn alone when you plan to paste the image into another program. For part of the screen, use Windows logo key + Shift + S.
