“Touch grass” means to go outside or step away from the internet and reconnect with real life. Online, it is often a teasing or dismissive way to tell someone they are too absorbed in internet activity—but it can also be a lighter nudge, depending on context.
How people use “touch grass”
The phrase starts with a literal image: going outdoors and touching or enjoying grass. Figuratively, it means taking a break from devices or online activity and engaging with the offline world. Dictionary.com records both the call to go outside and the broader sense of reconnecting with reality.
In internet conversations, it commonly works as a rebuke. Someone may say it to suggest that another person is taking an online argument, fandom, or other internet activity too seriously. Know Your Meme describes it as another way to tell someone to go outside.

Is it an insult?
It can be. The phrase often carries a put-down, especially when aimed at someone in a heated online exchange. But it is not always hostile: friends may use it playfully, someone may say it about themselves, or it may be a sincere, low-pressure reminder to take a break. The surrounding conversation and relationship between the people determine the tone.
Where did the phrase come from?
Its exact origin is not established by the consulted references. Know Your Meme reports examples on Twitter dating to at least 2015 and says the phrase began spreading significantly in 2019. Dictionary.com gives a first-recorded period of 2015–20. These are documentation windows, not proof of the first use, and they do not establish a definitive inventor, platform, or community.

Why does it sound funny—and annoying?
The phrase’s joke depends on the bluntness of its advice: a person caught up in online life is told to do something simple and physical. In a 2026 Atlantic podcast episode about people renegotiating their relationship with phones and online attention, artist and author Jenny Odell told staff writer Julie Beck that the phrase’s obvious truth helps make it “funny and annoying at the same time.” That is cultural commentary, not evidence of a measured effect of internet use.
